Generally, you don't have to jump off the bridge in order to do that.

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Gaza day
I was out choppin' figs and my brother was all 'Allah be praised'
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the Hamas feast
And Mama hollered out the tent door "y'all remember to curse the infidel beast"
And then she said "I got some news this mornin' from the Bay Ridge"
Today Mahmoud Abbas jumped off the Suez Canal Bridge.

Because he heard that "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." was doing poorly in the ratings and was due to be cancelled soon. Billie Joe just didn't want to live in a world without Napoleon Solo and Ilya Kuryakin.

The Wikipedia entry talks about rampant speculation that followed the release of the hit song in 1967:
quote:
Questions arose among the listeners: what did Billie Joe and his girlfriend throw off the Tallahatchie Bridge, and why did Billie Joe commit suicide? Speculation ran rampant after the song hit the airwaves, and Gentry said in a November 1967 interview that it was the question most asked of her by everyone she met. She named flowers, a ring, a draft card, a bottle of LSD pills, and an aborted baby as the most often guessed items. Although she knew definitely what the item was, she wouldn't reveal it, saying only "Suppose it was a wedding ring." "It's in there for two reasons," she said. "First, it locks up a definite relationship between Billie Joe and the girl telling the story, the girl at the table. Second, the fact that Billie Joe was seen throwing something off the bridge -- no matter what it was -- provides a possible motivation as to why he jumped off the bridge the next day."

A Warner Bros. movie in the 70s has a shamed Billy Joe committing suicide after getting drunk and stumbling into a same-sex escapade. But there's nothing in the song's lyrics to suggest anything like that.

It's blatantly obvious that the couple had a child out of wedlock and threw the baby into the river.

The guilt from such an act forced Billy Joe to jump off the bridge.

Now the young lady picks flowers and tosses them into the muddy waters as a memorial to them both.

Probably she miscarried or had the rural equivalent of a back-alley abortion. I think daddy would have noticed anything close to a full-term pregnancy.

If that's the case, why did Billy Joe see the necessity to jump to his death?

I've always thought it was just as McInnis said, except it was an aborted fetus.

On another note, this may be the single most annoying song ever written (other than Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie).
