Anybody have some good tips on cleaning an Aggie Ring? I know I could send it in but I was just wondering if anybody cleans their ring at home

TIA

There are various different types of cleaners which work pretty well.

I use the cleaners that the Aggie Moms sell. There is no ammonia or abrasives in it.

Personally I wouldnt listen too much to what the GB idiots say on something as priceless as your ring.

Go to a jewler or contact the association to see what they recommend.

Go to a Helzberg jewelry store in the mall or some such place and start looking at something expensive (nice watch, necklace, whatever). When a salesperson comes over to "help you", casually mention how dirty your aggie ring is getting. They will, for free, clean it with their high pressure power wash cleaner thing while you are browsing.

I've done this at least half a dozen times, and they always do it.

A local jeweler cleans mine for free in about 5 minutes.

I usually tip the guy $5.00

Call a local jeweler and ask

Oh yeah I forgot. A forum on which thousands of people have one would be a terrible source of advice.

Toothpaste and a soft brush. Makes my ring look brand new every time.

^ Not what I was trying to say Rho. Just that with something so precious to you why would you trust random advice from someone when you can get expert advice for free. Toothpaste works, so does a mixture of water and ammonia, ring polishes and even boiling your ring in water. The best that I have seen are the ultrasonic cleaning devices.

*Ammonia can cause damage to gold
*Toothpaste can be abrasive and lead to premature wear
*Some polishes are abrasive and or contain ammonia
*Boiling doesnt always get the ring as clean as other methods

Chucktheaggiejeweler suggested water with a little windex and lemon juice added and then microwave that mixture. Then dip your ring in that and polish clean.

That's all by memory from over a year ago though so I could be a little off

Pretty much every jeweler in the mall will clean it for you for nothing.... It takes about 2 minutes max.

Does any of that wash away the antique?

One can only hope it does.

Toothpaste/soft scrub and a toothbrush

I was told by my jeweler at Bock's that toothpaste is actually very abrasive and not very good for jewelry cleaning. Not sure about the softscrub though.

I used dish soap, a toothbrush and warm water last night. I forgot the eagle had wings.

Soft scrub is more abrasive

Dawn dish soap and hot water, put it in a small plastic container so you can shake it around for a minute or so and then let it sit for 15-20 minutes and it will come out looking brand new! Just did this yesterday, it's harmless to the ring.

It's not like toothpaste and softsoap are going to wear the ring smooth with a few cleanings ... Maybe use steel wool & lava soap!

I bought a little ultrasonic cleaner off Amazon a year ago and use that.
Works great.
I also use it on my wife's engagement ring, our wedding bands, and even our glasses.
Especially good for use on ElderSon's glasses. That kid gets stuff on 'em that I'm scared to identify.

Most jewelry stores clean any jewelry for free, ya know

Not that a man should know that. I discovered by accident. I'm just laughing at the lengths you're going to when you don't have to
