Replace one, and the idea is what kind of list do we end with. I'm assuming you're only allowed to be removed/subbed back in we'll say twice, then the candidate is gone.

I replace, Charlie Chaplin with Jack Nicholson

Al Pacino
Robert DeNiro
Daniel Day Lewis
Samuel L. Jackson
Jack Nicholson
Gary Oldman
Anthony Hopkins

Hanks belongs on the list. He's 1). chosen projects well on the whole 2). performed well in most of them 3). had some memorable roles 4). won an Oscar 5). made more money than any other actor to ever live (yes its true, look it up)

Made more money for himself, or been in more money-making movies than anyone else? If the latter I'd think Harrison Ford would blow Tom Hanks out of the water.

Sidenote: the three Toy Story films grossed right around a billion dollars total. Wow.

What are you, some sort of Commie or is the only Stewart movie you ever seen is It's a Wonderful Life? I agree that Duvall belongs on the list but Stewart should not be the one to come off.

I've seen plenty of Stewart movies. He's a great actor. But he was the weakest link on that list.

Of that generation, Henry Fonda was twice the actor.

Don't agree. IMO Stewart belongs on the list before Hanks (who I see in some respects as this generations 'Jimmy Stewart', Freeman, and especially DiCaprio (at least at this point in Leo's career). I agree Fonda should be on the list before Stewart. Somewhat a shame that Fonda did not win the Best Actor for his performance in The Grapes of Wrath because the Academy voters were giving it to Stewart for slighting him the year before.

Whichever way it is, give me Charlton Heston on the first team, bumping off the young gun DiCaprio.

DiCaprio is as steady an actor as there is, but he's yet to have an iconic role. One where you said 'Nope. Can't picture anyone else playing that character. Leo owned it.'

With that said, it's a shame only one person mentioned Paul Newman. I would bump Heston out with the quickness for Paul Newman.
