Do you remember your grandfather giving you a taste of whiskey, beer or wine and calling it a šluk (shlouk). That's actually a Czech-Moravian word for a sip.

Now that's a word I'm pretty sure I know how to pronounce but never knew how to spell that my late uncle used all the time. What does it mean?

jedanecky means - golly gee goodness! Some folks say the shorter version of 'je da' (my goodness) which stresses a little less emphasis on emotion.

S Panem Bohem (go with God)

Thanks. That's certainly the context my uncle (and Dad for that matter) always used it but neither would ever tell me what it meant so I always thought it was something far more "colorful".

Was it something like...jako hovno pod stonek? (like poop under a stem)

Depending upon the part of the Czech Republic where your family originated can result in slight wording variations. There are many Czech dialects.

Some Czech words are Americanized, like the word gate for instance. In standard Czech it's 'brana'. You talk to Texas Czechs and it's 'gapa' (for gap)

The recent chat about words in Czech makes me want to make it my 2012 resolution to learn to speak it. Anyone try Rosetta Stone?

The way my Czech buddy explained it to me was that "stokem" was a basterdization of the english work "stalk" stalk---stoke---stokem or somesuch

A few Czech language resources-
1. The Czech American TV website has a session called Czech Class.
2. Radio Prague's website has a tab called Sound Czech which has a great archive of mini-language sessions that deal with everyday life.
3. The FSL Language website has a complete downloadable Czech language class.
4. There's a great Czech/English dictionary by Josef Fronek ...very extensive.
5. If you live near Schulenburg Tx, Blinn College offers non-credit beginner & advanced classes one night/week during the Spring & Fall semesters.

Love the thread! Half Czech (mother's parents were Supaks & Kreneks) Thanks for bringing this back up.

From MouthBQ98:

They make pig in a blankets with the same dough.

If you're Czech, you know those 'pigs in a blanket' by a different name. They're either klobasnek or klobasniky. Phoenetically, that would be cloe-bosh-nek or cloe-bosh-knee-kee.

But whatever you call them, the Czech variety is GREAT!

Gig 'em!

I learned the pronounciation to sound like: yay-dahn-netch-key

Is that the way you learned it?

Found this thread on the new OB FAQ, and really enjoyed reading through it again. I posted the following on another thread a couple weeks ago, but seems more appropriate here: I am looking at doing a cycling vacation in the Czech Republic in a couple years (probably summer of '16) and wonder if anyone would be interested in this. Briefly, it would be 8-10 days of about 35 miles each day. The trip is categorized as 'easy', and really 35 miles is not bad if you have all day to do it. I'm figuring on stopping in every town I come to to enjoy a local beer! What do you think, Ags? Pojï se mnou!

Kolache Festival in Caldwell is the second saturday in September, that's the weekend of the Rice game this year, which isn't until 8:00pm so y'all ags stop on by in the morning. I'll be out there stuffing my face with tons of good food.

I just read this whole thread. Didn't know there were so many fellow square heads on the OB with me. My grandmothers maiden name was Michalewicz (czech as hell)and my mom's maiden name Weishuhn, which is kraut.

Practically the whole community in Wall, Olfen, Rowena, & St. Lawrence are of Czech/German descent.

I have always enjoyed listening to my grandmother and all of her sisters converse in the old language. Although, when I grew older I figured out they were using it to talk about things they didn't want us to know.

Anyways, loved reading all of the stuff on this board that reminds me of my family. Good biz.

Prazska Pout Festival tomorrow, Aug 15, Praha, Tx. St. Marys Catholic Church celebrates Feast of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary. It is an annual celebration of Czech heritage.

I am not able to attend this year but it is a good time for all ages and great party.

Praha is good times. Wish I could make it. My cousins are responsible for cooking the food. Both my parents are Czech-- charba/Koudelka from moulton. 100% Czech was broken by the wife. Family definitely still following the heritage.
Anyone go to kjt camp in la grange when they were kids? Those were good times
