I'm still 100%. Dad is from Halletsville and mom from Ennis. My grandmother was the six-time repeat Grand Champion kolache and strudel winner at Polka Fest during the 80s.

I am looking at doing a cycling vacation in the Czech Republic in a couple years (probably summer of '16) and wonder if anyone would be interested in this. Briefly, it would be 8-10 days of about 35 miles each day. The trip is categorized as 'easy', and really 35 miles is not bad if you have all day to do it. I'm figuring on stopping in every town I come to to enjoy a local beer! What do you think, Ags? Pojï se mnou!

That sounds like a blast

TreeHugger, I will most likely go with VBT, and might do the Slovakia ride rather than the Czech ride. The price is not bad at all, and I've just always wanted to see the Motherland. I'm in my 50's now, and I don't want to wait 'til it's too late to enjoy it as much as I might.

Reading through this thread is making me hungry for something....but I don't know what.

And I second Bohunk's advice to drive a couple of extra blocks past Czech Stop while in West.

Go Trojans!

Fido - did anyone in the family learn grandma's recipes?

yeah, my mom and sisters spent time making them every Christmas. I asked my mom to help me learn how to do the strudel...I've always enjoyed it more than kolaches.

Been awhile since anyone has bumped this thread.

For any of you Ags coming to the football game from the west, leave a little earlier than you planned and stop by Caldwell on 21 and czech out their Kolache Festival today before continuing on to tailgate.

Plenty of good food and stuff to look at, even have an antique tractor and car show, and of course plenty of kolaches (although they do start running out 9-10 in the morning for the more popular places).

We're headed out to the festival this morning from Bryan. My parents have been judges in past years but can't make it this year (Dad is Czech descent, Mom just married in.)

Tailgating a Clemson game in the afternoon/evening. Going to be a great damn day.

The Aggie number specified has already been linked with another TexAgs account.

Pierogi's certainly do have some Czech/Slovak influence. Not familiar with the other however. Not sure about the bob wills music either but he's from limestone county which certainly could mean he's got so Czech family or at least influence growing up. If he was actually singing in Czech I would suspect possible Czech maternal side???

Ok, sorry somehow I missed last 10 pages of this. I'm sure these were addressed somewhere in between. Wondered why another Czech thread already.

Just found this thread for the first time. Thought about you Mouth as I drove through/by Paige going and coming to the game yesterday.

Adolf Hofner and the Pearl Wranglers we're still performing in the 60's and 70's. They worked for Pearl Brewery and promoted the San Antonio Livestock Show n Rodeo.

Great memories of growing up. My dad would always have the Czech station playing in the background.

You can find plenty of fun in Polka. Especially when you're drinking with friends. You just gotta step off your high horse.

Great thread...I'm 50%. My 50% is from the Hallettsville/Shiner area. I still carry the original name from my great great grandpa who came over in the 1880s, and we still have the land. Love going out there.

My grandpa always had it on. When that wasn't on, he would play old tejano / Norteno music which is pretty much the same, just in Spanish.
