Sauerkraut is an acquired taste. But it is pretty good on a sausage in a bun with some mustard on top.

Definitely agree with the acquired taste. I never liked it until a few years into college. Now I eat it whenever it is around and really like it.

I'm like a lot of others here, regretting not learning the language. I can count, say some prayers, days of the week, and a few odd and end words, but no real conversational skills. My grandma (starenka) never learned English, and since I didn't speak Czech, I never got to really know her. I'm 100% Czech, and have in my family tree some Orsak, Holub, Vasek, Prochaska, Urban and Uherek blood.
The SPJST museum in Temple is a great resource...I went there and found out which town my grandma's family came from (Novy Hrozenkov), which boat she came over on, and lots of other information from old shipping records that they have.
If you wanna hear some Czech, every year on February 14th, which is Sts. Cyril and Methodius' Feast day, there is a Czech Mass at the Holy Trinity Catholic church in Corn Hill (East of 35, about halfway between Temple and Austin). This ain't no polka mass, where only the music is Czech...the whole thing, sermon included, is Czech. There are missalettes so you can follow along. Afterwards is a supper of sauerkraut, sausage, buttered potatoes, and kolaches, and the cost is whatever you want donate. You can look at masstimes dot org for address if you want to find it.

Kuz89, you and me and Strongbad could be distant relatives. We're both Patek/Holub with Matus on grandmother's side. Mom was born around Moulton somewhere. Grandma was born in Sweetwater.

There's a guy from Czech republic who works on my chainsaws on South Congress in Austin. He came to the US in the mid-early 90's. I was kidding him about how hot the women were from his home country.... but he disagreed. He loves the Mexican girls!

Curious, how is "Spanem Bohem" - Go with God- spelled correctly in Czech?

"God be with you" or "Go with God" I think is -- 'S Pane Bohem'

If I recall, this is one of those doesn't translate directly to English well.

I know 'S' is 'with', 'Pan' is kind of like a respectful 'Mr.' 'S Pane' is the prepositional phrase.

Not sure. Even though I was taught the formal language in high school, my grandfather (who can speak as well as write) tells me that a lot of the formal and proper stuff does not always equal stuff that the great-grandparents brought over. Along with the formal stuff, we were also taught traditional phrases at face value, and "S Pane Bohem" was one of those. There may be a proper way to say it, but I know the great Johnny I. always ends the Sunday Morning Polka Show with "S Pane Bohem".

The other great thing -- a lot of the old-timers (my grandmother included) include an "h" after a "t" if it does not belong (e.g. take out the thrash), and omit it when it does (e.g. looks like a tunderstorm along I-tirty). Also, Wayne and Vera are sometimes Vayne and Wera.

Great thread.

Yup... my grandpa and late grandmother did stuff just like that. He still says witskey instead of whiskey... i still call him dêdeček (dy-ede-check) and my grandma sometimes babička (bab-itch-kah)

Sure fire way to tell if someone is Czech. My mom still does this... I love hearing old czechs speak with this accent.

"S Pane Bohem" That reminds me of Alfert Vrazel on 1330 AM in Cameron, he always signed off with that phrase after his Czech melody hours on Sundays. My dad always listened to it when I was growing up... funny how I hated listening to it then but LOVE it now... turn it on whenever I get the chance.

My family is all from Corn Hill/Granger area and High Hill/Schelunburg/Weimar area. From there some have migrated to the Cameron/Zabcikville/Temple area and Celina/Pilot Point areas.

jpb, thanks for pointing me over here.....this thread brings back soooo many good memories for me. From West, born and bred, moved back there in June after being away since high school (16 years!). I am excited that my sons will be growing up there.

My wife isn't Czech or from West, but she's come to appreciate the culture. We got married in West and the reception was at the West Fraternal. Fried chicken, sausage, potatoes, kraut, and green beans. Plenty of strudel, buchta and kolaches.

Lots of great memories based on growing up coming from a Czech Texan family. I would note on kolache shops, if you are going through West, don't stop at Czech Stop, make the extra few blocks into town and stop at Ole Czech Bakery. GREAT stuff there.

Another note, when we lived in Magnolia, I was happy to discover quite a few Bohemians there! My wife and I LOVED to get out and go to those little church festivals in what we call God's Country in between Houston and San Antonio, like Dubina, Ammansville, Fayetteville, Needville, etc. Still haven't made the Praha festival, which is supposed to be the best one of them all, but our priest here in West takes a big group each year so maybe this summer!

One of my ex girlfriends was from Praha, and her family pretty much runs the Praha Picnic... it's fun times but always HOT AS F#$K!

If your making it to all the painted churches, you have to go to High Hill... I think it is the prettiest one.

There is always the Westphalia Picnic as well... if you make it I am one of the drunks frying chicken out back. It's alot of work, but you can't beat free beer and food all day!

That's another thing: The little catholic churches in the Czech towns. The one in Shiner is very cool, and it actaully has some stuff written in Czech in the stained glass and stonework. I think some of the other nearby churches are the same.

We drove through Westphalia the other day and went and looked at the church. Both my wife and I said we needed to come back for the picnic.

Hey, is the Old Store not open any more? We went into the other one, but it looked like the Old Store was for sale?

I'm probably related to some of you jokers. Dad's from Hallettsville - I'm 1/4 Czech, but my name is Bohemian, so the Czech influence is STRONG in our family. Dad and my uncles still speak it after picking it up from thier uncles from the "old country", and they used to play at the Folklife Festival as the Czech band. Fun childhood memories. Gma's cooking is the best. Kolaches and Klobasneks with cold pivo mmmmm.

One of the first words my kids learned was pupek! haha

What about:
Too Fat Polka
Out behind the Barn Polka
No beer on Sunday Polka

Here's a silly ditty,
You can sing it right away
Now, here is what you say
So sing it while you may

Here's a silly jingle,
You can sing it night or noon
Here's the words, that's all you need
'Cause I just sang the tune:

Oh, I don't want her, you can have her
She's too fat for me
She's too fat for me
She's too fat for me
I don't want her, you can have her,
She's too fat for me
She's too fat
She's too fat
She's too fat for me

I get dizzy
I get numbo
When I'm dancing
With my Jum-Jum-Jumbo

I don't want her, you can have her
She's too fat for me
She's too fat for me
She's too fat for me
I don't want her, you can have her
She's too fat for me
She's too fat
She's too fat
She's too fat for me

Can she prance up a hill?
No, no, no, no, no
Can she dance a quadrille?
No, no, no, no, no
Does she fit in your coupe?
By herself she's a group
Could she possibly
Sit upon your knee?
No, no, no.........
