Husband will be making sausage for the first time next weekend with a friend and needed some meat. He shot an axis for the second time ever...and this one was pregnant just like the first.

She was less developed than the first, but you can see this is a boy. Their gestation period is only 7-8 months.

I was curious to know what an axis fetus would look like...knife in the picture for scale. The hooves are really white.

I guess you killed 2 deer with 1 shot.

jobu - I actually live in Katy but haven't seen the infamous *cougar* yet on my runs along the bayou. However, I did see an egret (I believe) with a frog in it's mouth.

I grew up there from '75 on and have played, fished, and gigged in those bayous. Plenty of bobcats, and plenty of aligators. I ran over a gator right after they opened up 99 out there. Thing scared the crap out of me and messed up my alignment.

I miss the sound of the 'yotes at my parent's place in Cinco.

jobu - I would like to see an alligator there but haven't yet. Someone hit a deer the other day that is still by the side of the road. Haven't seen the head though to tell if it's a buck or a doe.

My BIL hit a wild hog going around a 90-degree corner by our house...I had never had roadkill until then. Made great sausage! Hopefully this axis sausage will be just as good when we are done.

Reminds me one time that ole Boudro was fishing down by the river. He'd been fishing all day and had just run out of bait. He was getting ready to leave and looked down and saw a big water moccasin with a big frog in its mouth. Well, ole Boudro decides that with that frog he could really get a big bass for supper.

Then after thinking on it a minute or so, he realizes that he is going to have a problem with that snake when he gets the frog out of his mouth. It is very likely to bite him before he can let go.

Then he comes up with the solution. He pulls out his bottle of moonshine and dribbles a few drops in that moccasin's mouth. Grabs the frog and lets the moccasin slither back into the river.

Well, he'd beem fishing for a few minutes when something starts hitting his ankle. He looks down and it is that watter moccasin with two frogs in his mouth.

Boudreaux.

That one's always funny.

I once saw a heron swoop down and pluck a swimming rattlesnake out of the water and eat it when fishing near POC.

Neat. If you look closely, you can already see the spots developing on its hide.
