Do these guys have some kind of immunity when it comes to obeying traffic laws? These idiots are like vultures. I have seen on numerous occasion where the driver is obviously trying to beat other drivers to a call and almost cause wrecks. One even went as far as to run a red light, go into oncoming traffic and jump the median to get back into the correct lanes. Do I just call the cops when I see this?

The problem is the city's system of determining which driver gets the job. It's a mad dash to the tow site then the cops pick the winning tow truck driver's license coin from a hat. They have to get there as quick as they can to even be considered. Seems to me there has to be a better way to go about it. I've seen numerous tow trucks going faster than traffic flow down the emergency lanes just barely avoiding cars along the way.

If I am driving and suddenly see a tow truck driver, half eaten sandwich, and Bedpost Brown sitting in the middle of the road, and can only swerve to avoid two, I am gunning it and aiming straight at the tow truck driver.

If I had a nickel for every time I saw a tow truck try to cause an accident, clip a parked car, or engage in general dumbassery, I would have enough nickel filled socks to beat every tow truck driver in the city into a persistent coma.

yes, the first wrecker on scene gets the tow. if multiple ones show up before I disregard them, then they flip for the tow. (in the county, they draw from a hat) several times I have kicked wreckers off my scene if i watched them do something reckless trying to be first.
however, wreckers are a necessary evil and the first time a crook pulled a gun on me, a wrecker driver was my only back up and he ran to help me out so, mixed feelings on my end.

I remember reading an article about how the city of Philadelphia transitioned to a rotation system. I'd be all four Houston doing it too.

When I was t-boned a few months back I had my truck towed to my driveway. The look on the wrecker driver's face when I declined the tow to his yard was priceless.

Saw a tow truck truck pull in to a parking lot earlier today.

Was towing a Volvo XC60. tow truck had lifted it up by the front end. The front wheels were off the off the ground.

The guy peels in the parking lot and I see that the Volvo is all-wheel-drive and the guy is towing it while its in gear.

The drive line is engaged and the rear wheels were powering the front wheels. So the two wheels that were off the ground were spinning the same as the rear wheels.

I yell at the guy, hey man that volvo is in gear. All 4-wheels were spinning when you pulled in. The guy gave me a thumbs up and said he was going to fix it.

So he somehow chains up the front of the volvo where the front wheels are off the ground and can spin freely.

Tow druck driver drives off with the Volvo accelerating to highway speed with it still in gear.

Maybe it was the repo man. Maybe the dude had stole the car.

The guy had a car on a flat bed and was towing this Volvo.

But the reason for this story is that someone on here was talking about a car fire caused by someone towing a vehicle in gear.

So if you got an all wheel drive car, you got to be careful for that. That car might very well be totaled.

So yeah some of these truck drivers are crazy.

On this subject, say you have an accident or run out of gas or for whatever reason your car breaks down, do you have to allow a tow truck to remove your car or can you refuse? I've always wanted to know what I'm obligated to do when it comes to this situation.

It's my understanding that Houston is one of the few that use the system they currently have. It's absurd and probably dangerous.

I believe they have to at least tow you off the freeway to the nearest safe location for free.

O have an AWD and required a tow. I specified it had to be a flatbed. Reg truck shows up and I refuse. Telling him it's AWD. He was pissed off and tried to charge me via my insurance. I disputed and after a few weeks it's was sorted out. I called a company on my own and arranged a flat bed. Even the ins company is useless. USAA btw.
