Making a 2011-2012 V6 Mustang sound like a V8

I'm thinking about getting a new exhaust system put on my new 2012 V6 mustang. I'd like to get an exhaust that sounds mean and throaty and like a rice burner or one of those annoying sounds. Anyone have any recommendations for a nice sounding exhaust?

Your car will *never* sound like a V8 unless you rig up some speakers and some software to emulate one.

V6 sportscars can be made to sound very sporty (and even exotic), but the more you open your car's exhaust, the more it will remind you that it is *not* a V8.

Chances are someone makes a true-dual catback setup for your car by now. I'd look for something with an X-pipe.

Ironically, probably the best you can hope for is to make your car sound like a 350Z or G35 running true duals/high flow cats/headers. That's about as "good" as a street-driven V6 will sound. The V6 Genesis coupes sound similar when opened up.

instead of buying a 2012 V6 you should have bought a 2-3 yr old V8

Thanks for the advice! I know it won't ever really sound like a V8 but something meaner would be nice. It's really too quiet.

Why buy a 2-3 year old V8 when the 2012 gets 31mpg and has 305HP. The 2010 GT has 310 but it's heavier. The 2011-2012 V6 is faster than the 2010 GT.

this is why you buy the 5.0 instead of the six

My V6 sounds pretty fabulous at 8000 rpm.....

You cannot make a V6 sound like a V8 no matter what you do with the exhaust. The firing order just doesn't allow it.

I know it will never sound like a V8 I was just trying to make it sound like more of a muscle car. I know it's only a V6 but that's more than enough for me. Plus I'm only 22 and a GT would have killed me with insurance.

I knew a guy with an '01 V6 that he made look like a Cobra-R including the full huge wing on the back.

Anyway, I think he had a flowmaster setup that sounded pretty good at low RPMs, but not so great at higher RPMs. But it wasn't bad.

I have a 2002 V6 with tru-duals Flowmaster Super 40s. Sounds great at idle or under 2000 RPM. Once you open it up, it sounds like...well...a V6.

EDIT: I mainly did it for the looks. I got a GT rear bumper cover with the dual cutouts to go with it. Looks like a GT until you turn the key.

Save your money for something useful, like gas or a blow-up doll.

If when looking for a sports car you are concerned about the gas mileage....you're doing it wrong.

Hell my 99 WS6 still gets ~26mpg on the highway, and it would smoke the new mustangs.

It's rated at 26 and that's with the VERY generous old ratings.

your V6 and the V8 will both sound the same when they are turned off.

Otherwise, it's apparent from the moment you turn the key. Your 6 will sound OK up to 2,000 rpm, after that, forget it.

This is absurd. Unless you are made of money it is perfectly reasonable to be concerned about fuel economy, no matter what you want to drive.

if you're buying a v6 Spice, i agree. if you're after anything else, i disagree.

fuel economy also matters in terms of convenience. It's a pain in the ass to have to fill up my M5 every 160 to 200 miles. I wish I could get 300 out of a tank.

put a Briggs V-Twin in the trunk and then you'll be able to enjoy the sound of 8 cylinders firing

I can get 500 miles from a tank, but it is also a pain in the ass to have to see 33 gallon ($120+) fill ups.

36 gallon fuel tanks get cut off at the pump every time.

I really don't get this. So if I want a Ford truck with power, do I have to buy a Raptor with the 6.2 because fuel economy shouldn't matter?

If Ford had two V8s for the Mustang, would it be OK to choose the one with better fuel economy?

Or if you are buying a Cayman, you have to buy the S because you're not a real man if you care about fuel economy a bit?

for one..my comment was mainly around sports cars. what i mean is, if i'm buying a two door sports car fuel economy is probably one of the last criteria i would care about. if after all other choices it was down to two v8s, and they offered the same HP and other qualities i wanted, yeah i'd choose the better fuel economy option.

and if the non-S cayman offered everything i wanted, that's what i'd buy. i don't care about picking a manly option, i want to pick what i want. if i was THAT concerned about fuel economy, i wouldn't be buying a two door sports car to begin with.

Mustang (v6 or GT or any form of one) != "Sports car".

Bull****, maybe in a crappy magazine test, but the last gen GT had a mountain of torque more than the V6 and more power throughout the entire rev range. It may be a close drag race due to the gearing, but the V6 will never be more fun to drive or feel like the V8 short of a supercharger. I'd take a 2010 GT and get 27 mpgs on the highway over a 31 mpg NA V6 anyday. Not to mention the sound....

Crappy magazine test? You mean a test where the drivers are better at launching than you? So if the lighter 2012 Mustang V6 is quicker than a 2010 GT you just don't believe it? The V6 is probably quicker around a race track too because of better handling.

No arguing about the sound. But quickness is quickness to me - I don't care if gearing is part of the factor assuming it isn't an 8 speed manual I'd have to shift constantly or a CVT.

pull engine. install new LS2. Install corsa stainless headers. Put corvette crossed flag emblem on the front and back. That should be a good start.

The magazine tests are inconsistent and everyone knows it. I just looked up some road tests online and they are saying the 11' V6 is good for about 5.4 0-60. Road and Track took the 2005 Mustang GT to 60 in 4.9 seconds. As far as the road track it is probably pretty close with the 2010 Track Pack GT. The V6 may have 305 hp, but its got all its power in the upper rpm range where the 2010 GT has a much fatter torque curve, which is much more fun on the street. The high end power is fine for drag races, but isn't as useful on the street.

So it would still be slower than a 2011 GT?
