"And if you see Johnny football hero in the hall Tell him he played a great game
Tell him you liked his article in the newspaper"

"I'm Popular" by Nada Surf circa 1996

The whole song, except for the chorus, are parts made up from the 1964 teen advice book Penny's Guide to Teen-Age Charm and Popularity, written by television actress Gloria Winters. The excerpts are spoken in a sarcastic tone by Matthew Caws. A rerecorded version from 2007 appears on the band's MySpace.[1]

I remember Joe Reinagel from Kens5 used to call him "Johnny Football" when showing highlights from the Kerrville games.

This one sounds the most logical...It totally sounds like something Joe Reinagel would say during his Friday Night Football coverage.

I heard early on the Sherman coaching staff call him Johnny Touchdown.

That's good input, Aggies_bro81. Sounds like an interview of Joe Reinagel on Texags Radio would be a good task for Gabe to help get to the bottom of this burning question.

So I decided to dig further and sent an email to Joe Reinagel to which he replied quickly. In response to the question about whether he may have heard it from someone else before using on the air, he replied:

quote:
Honestly James, I don't remember hearing that from anyone, sometimes things come out of my mouth during football highlights and I don't know where they come from.

I would like to check with the folks in Kerrville to see if that nickname was used there.

It is possible I heard from someone else

I will get back to you asap. I am very happy that Johnny is having so much success on the next level, I always enjoyed watching him play here!

Joe

Thanks for the help, Joe (and your contribution to a developing Aggie legend)!

It was in one of the recruiting articles when we were recruiting him. I think one of the coaches talking about him used it

I know his uncle and spoke with him two weeks ago. He said when JFF was an infant they put one of the old aTm foam footballs in his hand that used to be thrown into the stands at Kyle.

He held it like a QB and his family has been calling him Johnny Football ever since. Maybe I should get with Gabe and have him talk to his uncle??

His HS football coach said the radio guys in kerrville came up with all kind of crazy names and were a lively bunch.

Johnny Football was likely one of the many names they used during football season.... has a better ring than johnny baseball in the spring lol!

Landman, if Gabe and Johnny's uncle would be open to doing an interview, that would definitely be cool. If that story is true, it just adds to the legend.

I heard he wasn't born in America, so he can't run for president.
I know it is true because someone said it.

I'm not sure if it started in high school but his original high school nickname was "Johnny Touchdown." Johnny Football happened later

Have you heard anything else from him? I get the feeling he's the one that came up with the nickname but he doesn't want to take credit for it since he's not 100% sure that he made it up.

Thanks for the revival of this thread. It sounds if it is still somewhat a mystery. Could be added to the discussion from Saturday's ESPN Game Day " the Legend of JF". That was fun to watch.

Johnny + football = Johnny Football

Very simple math.
