A buddy of mine texted me earlier asking about teammates that finished 1-2 in MVP voting. The only one that I could think of off the top of my head while commuting was Maris & Mantle finishing 1-2 in 61. I pulled up baseballrefernce tonight and looked it all up. Thought I'd share since I'd already typed it all out.

quote:
2000 - Jeff Kent & Barry Bonds - Giants
1990 - Bonds & Bonilla - Pirates
1989 - Kevin Mitchell & Will Clark - Giants
1983 - Ripken & Eddie Murray - Orioles
1976 - Joe Morgan & George Foster - Reds
1971 - Vida Blue & Sal Brando - A's
1968 - Denny McClain & Bill Freehan - Tigers
1967 - Orlando Cepeda & Tim McCarver - Cardinals
1966 - Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson, Boog Powell (3) - Orioles
1965 - Zoilo Versalles & Tony Oliva - Twins
1962 - Mantle & Bobby Richardson - Yankees
1961 - Maris & Mantle - Yankees (I'm SMART!)
1960 - Maris & Mantle - Yankees
1960 - Dick Groat & Don Hoak - Pirates
1959 - Nellie Fox, Luis Aparicio, Early Wynn (3) - White Sox
1956 - Mantle & Berra - Yankees
1956 - Don Newcombe & Sal Maglie - Dodgers
1955 - Campanella & Snider - Dodgers
1945 - Hal Newhouser & Eddie Mayo - Tigers
1944 - Hall Newhouser & Dizzy Trout - Tigers
1943 - Stan Musial & Walker Cooper - Cardinals
1942 - Mort Cooper & Enos Slaughter - Cardinals
1941 - Dolph Camilli, Pete Reiser, Whit Wyatt (3) - Dodgers
1934 - Mickey Cochrane, Charlie Gehringer - Tigers

Makes sense that it would be more common back in the day as we've doubled the number of teams and diluted the talent around the league, but still pretty crazy how it went from happening every year/every couple of years to twice in the last 20.

Also interesting
1993 - Paul Molitor (2), John Olerud (3), Bobby Alomar (7), Joe Carter (12) I wasn't really paying attention to how common that many guys near the top was, that just jumped out at me

Actually, as I continue to go back there are a good number of teammates that finished 2-3. Not gonna bother to list them all

Saw this one too

1974 - Joe Rudi (2), Sal Brando (3), Reggie Jackson (4), Catfish Hunter (6) - A's

As an aside, Curtis granderson could finish with 35 homers, 120 RBI and 120 runs, and still not win the MVP. Crazy that the yanks have 2 players that could legitimately finish in the top 5 in the MVP.

Thanks. I don't really feel like I add that much anymore. my Texags heyday was nearly a decade ago. now my only value is trying to moderate some of the vitriol between Dallas and Houston. too bad I lost the password to Dale Murphy. he was always good for advice on Mormonism, dropping pearls of wisdom and homeruns up your ass.

I'm rather taken with 1990 AL Cy Young vote of 1) Bob Welch, OAK; 3) Dave Stewart, OAK; 5) Dennis Eckersley, OAK.

In 1990, Stewart was #2, Mike Moore #3, Eckersley #6.

Dave Stewart --> 22-11, 2.56 ERA, 267 IP

Bob Welch ------> 27-6, 2.95 ERA, 238 IP

Im a astros fan but that 1989 sf giants team with will clark hitting third and kevin Mitchell fourth was a fun team to watch. I must have went to four games that year at the astrodome vs them because they always seemed to play such good games against each other.
