Seems like a uber cheap way to get 40 acres to ride the quads and drink some shiner and shoot some beer cans?

We spent one summer near Silverton, CO and noticed cabins built on what looked like public land. We were told they were old mining claims. It seems that the claims allow structures to be built on them, for obvious reasons, so people are building summer cabins. San Juan County is trying to establish zoning ordinances, but I suspect they have such a small tax base and budget, that would be a daunting task if they do it where it will withstand legal challenges.

I looked into it you can put up a temp building but it requires BLM approval. RVs are OK without approval. You cannot spend more than 14 consecutive nights there. You have to have a plan for mining.(i.e. I would say I plan on working weekends 2 out of every 4 a month). Shovel and panning only, bigger equipment also requires approval. You own the claim it is real deeded property, but you do not own the land. You cannot prohibit hunters or hikers from your claim but you can post a warning that this is an active claim and no unauthorized prospecting is allowed (My bet that would keep most folks away). You have to update your claim every two years and that cost $140 unless you have proof of actual mining in which case the fee is waived. Might be a fun hobby to boot and something to let the grandkids fight over in a will (Grandpa in Arizona has a gold mine!!)

That looks like fun... what's $3 grand anyway. Play money.

I'd waste it in Vegas anyway. I am in need of a new hobby, although the little misses would probably disagree.

I read a book recently called Bacon and Beans from a gold pan. True story about a depression era guy maybe 25 and his new wife who can't find jobs in Northern California so they go up to the mountains and start panning for gold. They made a better living than doing nothing. Seems like a good idea for those unemployed today, but it is also a lot of work.
