How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have been taking lessons to get a better swing and become a better golfer.. I did't want a band aid fix. Through my series of lessons (3 of 6) I have a really good understanding of the mechanics of the golf swing.

However, I can't seem to execute what I know or what my instructor is telling me to do. My backswing is perfect. My problem is with the Down swing and getting my hips to start that process. So now what happens is on the downswing my hands are getting ahead of my hips..

Anybody have any pointers to try and get the hips to lead and get the club to follow??

I have reached a mental and physical block..

Good drill to fix your problem: Stand with your back to a wall (one you don't mind scratching) and do your slow backswing with the clubhead slightly touching the wall. Now on your downswing make sure your clubhead stays in contact with the wall as you lower your hands, fire your hips, and start your downswing. This feeling of "staying on the wall" will keep you from coming over the top and force your hands and shoulders from getting forward too fast.

Thanks for the info.. The whole fire your hips is what I can't seem to grasp..

I take it you need to stand far enough away from the wall to get into a backswing correct?

Correct. Adjust your distance from the wall based on your backswing with the clubhead just riding the wall on your backswing. You don't have to make an over concious effort to fire your hips. But rather think more about keeping the clubhead back against the wall on the downswing. This will keep your shoulders from turning too quick, thus forcing your hips ahead of your shoulders.
You can use an "imaginary" wall to get the feeling after you do it a couple of times in slow motion.

Just think Shoulders back, Hips forward.

You use your arms/shoulders at the start of the back swing.

As you get close to the top, tell yourself hips. You're hands and arms will always catch up with your hips.

1 tip...

Just think pause at the top. You probably wont actually pause, but if you give your hips just a millisecond more time to fire, you should be fine.

Right elbow position. If your hands are leading, it has to have flared.

Tuck a headcover under your right armpit. If it falls, your hips have not started the proper rotation bringing the rest of the body thru, or it exposes other issues too, which may mean you are trying too hard to push the club through with your right arm.

Putting a head over under your arm is a drill to teach proper swing plane and is not a very good one to boot. Literally has nothing to do with "the firing of the hips".

OP, you swing your arms back and through, everything else should follow. Working to intentionally release your hips can lead to you getting your hips and weight ahead of the flu head at impact and you'll dislike that more than you dislike not hitting it as far as you'd like.

If you swing your arms straight back and straight through (use a basketball in your hands to create the perfect motion) everything else should follow in turn. Arms lead the swing hips store and release power. It will all fall into place if you just swing your arms back and through on plane with proper grip, alignment and posture. Without those three setup keys right, your swing is already flawed and you can't learn anything from it.

Get proper posture, grip and alignment then swing your arms back and through. HTH.
