I live inside the loop on the west side of houston and am looking to join a good country club within 20-25 minutes and has junior executive membership programs.

I have looked a lot into places like BraeBurn and others such as River Bend, Willow Fork, Westwood, etc., but want to know if anyone has any insight into the type of members they currently have. Are there a decent amount of sub 35 year olds at clubs like that? I know they would never be a majority but I want to find a good place for a Saturday foursome and good stuff for my wife and I to do together as well. We are both under 30 and do not have kids. Thanks in advance.

I am a member at Brae Burn and love it. I am older than the junior age requirement. The capital improvements will be done by the July 4th which were desperately needed.

I looked at Pine Forest, Royal Oaks, Westwood, and Lake side.

I choose Brae Burn because it matched what I wanted and my pocket book.

Brae Burn has an older crowd but that has changed over the last year even since I have been there. We also have a group of 18 on a blast email list that gets sent out every Wednesday for people wanting to play on Saturday and Sunday.

I would be happy to answer any questions.

I'm a member at Riverbend and I really like it. The course is a great course. It's tough and always in good shape. The club is always putting together different sorts of activities for its members. It's also a relatively small place, so the course it pretty open. I can go on weekdays after work and squeeze in 18 during the summer.

The only negative is that it is a much older crowd. I haven't seen many young people under the age of 30 besides the high schoolers that practice there. When I joined, I asked about the younger guys because I was hoping to meet others to play with there (I'm 22). I'll see a few younger guys every now and then , but for the most part, everyone seems to be 45+.

As an aside, is Houston CC pricey to join? It's a cool little course and always seems to be in great shape.

If you're under 40, you're likely to be one of the younger guys at a CC, no matter which one you join. I'm out at Golfcrest and while it's not a retirement village, it's rare I see a group of 25-40 y/o playing. Don't get me wrong, there are some, but it's not that common.

Based on the couple guys I know at Houston CC, I'd guess initiation is $50K minimum but probably north of there.

I'm pretty sure Houston CC is way more than $50k for a full member, possibly north of $100k.

Not sure if you are talking about junior though, which may seem reasonable for $50k

Im also at Golfcrest, and I agree with 98/99.

I fall under the junior rate, but I am in the minority. There are a few other guys my age, but they also have kids whereas I dont, so its easier for me to break away more often.

Overall I dont mind, because I enjoy playing with some of the experienced guys who give me pointers to develop my game. But I suppose its like that at various country clubs.

jonj- shoot me an email and we'll get together sometime to play. I'm usually always playing by myself out there: elp3022@yahoo.com

This is why I haven't joined a club. I really want to joine Pine Forest CC. Close to the house, very reasonable junior rates, and a brand new resort style pool for wife and future kids.

But it means missing out on Saturday golf rounds with all of my friends that I play with regularly.

Kind of dumb to have a membership and play golf with your buddies at a local public course, and they're not going to want to shell out $85/round to play at your course on a regular basis.

This is the balancing act, and there's no right or wrong answer.

You (we, collectively) can either:

1. Play golf at a public course with guys that you've known forever, can shoot the bull with, give each other sh*t when they duff a shot, etc.

or

2. Play golf at a private club which is presumably nicer, with people you either don't know or just met, but don't have to deal with 5+ hour rounds. Meanwhile, the wife and kids can have a good time at the pool/tennis courts/club while you're playing golf. Also, there are tons of activities for the family throughout the week.

I'm weighing my options of joining a private club myself.

I was never lucky enough to have a regular group of friends I played with. I grew-up playing with my dad and his buddies; out of my group I'm the only one who ever played. Joining a CC was perfect for me for that reason.

All my friends have too many kids to play golf on a regular basis or don't want to play on a regular basis.

I made an agreement with my wife early on, I get to play golf and she wanted kids. I wanted a kid but I was fine at one. So when the discssion of another kiddo came up, we are having #2..

Thanks again guys for the help.

I have also looked into Sugar Creek CC. I actually grew up in Sugar Creek and played golf there when i was a kid a bunch. Anybody heard anything recently about the new renovations to the place?

I played sugar creek about a yr ago and surprisingly the greens were in fantastic shape. The rest of the course.... Not so much. It's an old man golf course designed for old guys who hit driver 180 yards. If you hit driver over about 260 yards then I hope you enjoy hitting irons off tees.

I joined The Houstonian a couple months ago and love the place. The golf course is fantastic. I'm in the same boat you are (late 20's) and as far as I can tell I'm the youngest member they've got. There are some mid 30's guys out there, but I haven't really played with any of them. Most of the people I've met out there are very nice (there's a few d-heads that think they own the place, but you'll find that everywhere). But in my opinion it's the best golf course on that side of town and I've played them all (sweetwater, riverbend, Westwood, sugar creek, etc.). Another benefit to the houstonian is you also get membership at redstone and blackhorse and can play their courses anytime for only a cart fee. So this weekend I'm playing the houstonian and the tournament course at redstone, which is a pretty nice little benefit.

Golfcrest member here as well. Within the last 6 months there have been quite a few younger guys/families join (all under 32 or so). I have enjoyed my membership so far, just need to play more.

Re HCC- it's not the Jr initiation (~$15k) that gets you, it's the process of getting in. You have to be very well connected to get in a place like that. You also have to make up the difference between the Jr initiation and the full equity initiation of $100k plus.

Good to hear about some younger guys joining at Golfcrest. It really is a great club.

1391- initiation is 18k, but you get a 10% discount for paying in full. Monthly dues are $365 for individual or $415 for couple.

98/99 - I'll shoot you an email. We can def get in a round. Im usually there all day Saturday.

Also, I know that Golfcrest is outside of the area the OP is looking for, but one more thing I have to note is how everyone Ive met there have been pretty chill and very cordial - not just staff but all the members as well. I had no connection when I joined, and didnt know a single person. The earlier comment about d-bags anywhere you go is what I assumed when I first joined - that sooner or later at a country club I was going to run into some wealthy jackass that acts like they own the place. But a number of guys who have been there for decades or most of their lives have invited me to play rounds and been pretty cool. Guys who have been pretty suuccesful and are good golfers will sit at a table and have a beer with a hack like myself.

Really a laid back, fun place.

I can say the same at Brae Burn.. I assumed most would be pompous asses. However, the majority of nice and easy going people out numbers the jerks..

You basically know who the not so nice individuals are especailly if they are on TV alot..

Joined Golfcrest about 2 years ago and love it. Course is in great shape. So are the tennis courts. Our young daughter loves taking lessons from Becky.

There was a waiting list for golf memberships. If there are any open they probably won't last long.

We should get a Texags group going one weekend.
