Will be staying in Newport Beach on vacation in July with the fam. Mother got some special deal to play at a course called Shadow Ridge in Palm Desert. Looks like a cool course but it is 2 hours away and the average high is 108 degrees that time of year. So would be a PITA to try to get out there for a morning round.

Anyways, looking to keep it close and cooler if at all possible but not looking to go all out with the $$$ as we will have two novices in our group. So $150+ green fees prob out of the question for this outing.

Any good options in that general area? Willing to travel up to 30 miles or so from Newport Beach area. TIA

Dana point has a very nice course called Monarch Beach but may be out of your price range not sure.

I played a course called Shore Cliffs in San Clemente that was cheap and not terrible. However, i think they are all aerating their greens this time of year so anywhere you go will probably have that going on.

Anaheim hills golf club is nice. I played there a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the suggestions, will add those to the list...afte rbrowsing GolfNow and doing a little web searching, I've also got Eagle Glen, Black Gold Golf Club, and Coyote Hills. Out of those 3, Black Gold looks most interesting to me. Surprisingly, golf does not appear to be as outrageously priced as I was expecting for California.

Look at the twilight rate at pelican hill. I don't remember the exact rate but it was much cheaper than going off in they morning. My father in law and I really enjoyed playing and still got in 18.

Pelican Hill looks unreal...would love to play it sometime but can't justify dropping $160 plus $80 club rental fee on twilight round for wifey who doesn't really play.

El Dorado muni is a good budget track. Not postcard material like Pelican Hill, but decent enough.

Add Arroyo Trabuco to your list. To me it is the best bang for your buck. Black Gold is a great choice and Eagle Glen is one if my favorites but is extremely hot in the summer.

Coming from Houston, I embrace dry heat of 108-ish or less (as long as there's some kind of breeze). Just have to remember to keep drinking water. Played in Scottsdale last May in 104 degree heat and me and coworkers thought it felt great. Cart girl thought we were insane though for ordering a few beers before teeing off and we soon found out why.

Average temps in Corona appear to be around 93 for Corona, CA in July with a record high of 100, so not going to rule it out.

I appreciate the recs.

Live nearby in Laguna.

Arroyo Trabuco
Tijeras Creek
Oak Creek
Talega
Oak Quarry
Journey at Pechanga
San Clemente Muni
Coyote Hills

Pelican is overpriced IMO and I would rather play Torrey (prestige factor), Aviara (top conditions always), or Trump National (Views and service). All three of those can be played less than Pelican, if you are willing to play non-peak times.

Forgot about Torrey Pines, not too far from us. North vs. South???

Muero, you can make it Torrey in about 45-50 minutes (with minimal traffic) from south OC.

Play either North or South....South will be more expensive as it is the championship course and more difficult. Some amazing views.
