I've thought about getting my wife a new set that might encourage her to play more. She played in high school and used to be pretty darn good before she moved on to other things, like shopping. Nice fundamentally sound swing still to this day.
She played blades in high school though Ping Eye 2s were available along with a few GI irons. She didn't like larger clubheads with offset then and still doesn't like them today. She can't stand 460cc drivers either. Go figure. I would like to set her up with some of the decently forgiving player's irons out there like AP2s, JPX pros, MP-59s, Cally X Forged etc., which still have the look at address that she'd like.
My thinking is have your wife pick out an iron that she likes the look of at address whether it's a men's or women's set, then get her fit for the right shaft, etc. as long as the head can be reasonably bent to accommodate a lie more typical for women and can be swingweighted for the shorter 75-95 gram shafts she'll probably be using. If that can't be done, you're probably stuck with having to buy women's clubs.
There are some great ultra lightweight steel shaft options out there, no imperative need for graphite and the extra expense that may go along with it.
