Question on Junior Golf Clubs

My 9-year old son is really starting to love golf and wanting to play more competitively. He's been playing with US Kids sets for the past few years (different sets as he's grown), but he's about to outgrow that brand altogether. He's almost 5' tall now and swings with pretty good speed (haven't tested swing speed, though).

Any advise on where we go from here? Other junior clubs? Men's clubs, and just cut the shafts down (but does that throw off the swing weight)? Someone even suggested women's clubs.

Any advise is appreciated.

my kid is 11 and has been playing US Kids for 3 sets now....they launched a competitive player set last year that might be good for your son....stiffer shafts and longer clubs. At 5' they should fit him and then some.....

US kids tour sets are very nice. Steel shafts in irons and great woods, I've actually hit them. Once he gets to be 12+ then move to maybe senior mens or mens. US kids has a great warranty program on broken ones as well, plus you can get a full set unlike other junior sets.

Definitely do not cut down men's clubs. They will be too stiff and too heavy, and he'll develop that little "hop" that you see in a lot of junior golfers' swings on the downswing, where they try to handle a club that's too stiff and heavy.

When my boys were growing up I built clubs for them using components from Golfsmith. If you live near a Golfsmith, I suggest taking him in and getting him fitted, and have them build a set for him with their components, assuming you're not a club building hobbyist like I was at the time. Then you can probably have Golfsmith reshaft them in 2-3 years when he grows out of them, or depending on his growth spurts and interest in the game, this can be a bridge set to men's clubs once he gets to be about 5-4 or 5-6.

You're doing the right thing to keep him in clubs that fit him. If they learn the right fundamentals and have clubs that fit them properly, they can avoid some of the swing and setup posture flaws that are the result of clubs that are too short, too long, or too stiff and heavy.

Callaway XJ are nice, but not a full set. The US kids you can order single clubs which is unlike any other junior set. And the quality of the tour set is un paralleled.

If hes that serious get him fitted. Secondly, although not related to clubs but the swing itself, let him swing as hard and fast as he wants.

Stay with the US Kids Golf sets until he is big enough for an adult set.

Unless they are playing in the AJGA, I think you should go economical until it gets serious and they get to 11-12 yrs/ 5 ft plus tall.

On the junior golf playing field, my kids have done just as good with the US Kids Sets as they kids with the Callaway Xs, Cleveland, and Nike's against 8-11 yr olds their ages.

You are just buying a name and no real advantage in those sets. It you are looking for a competitive advantage, get them fitted and custom built clubs.

We saw that at the Chip, Putt and Drive last year. We witnessed an 8 year old hitting it 250 with his fitted Rocketballz Driver. If it is that serious, spend the money on a custom fitting.
