Just returned from an extended weekend trip to Lajitas. A friend of mine and I took the wives out and played 54 holes in 3 days. Once you see the course with your own eyes you simply can't describe it to fellow friends that didn't make the trip. It simply is impossible to imagine the course being in Texas and especially in the desolate desert mountains of Big Bend.

The grass is as lush green as any course I've ever been on which includes some pretty big name areas. The greens tend to be much slower than their appearance lets on but they are challenging with multiple levels and difficult pin placements.

Hole 1, 2 and 3 ease you into the scenery and are located on relatively flat terrain. Hole 4 begins a stretch of holes that continue to get better one right after the other. Huge elevated tee shots, panoramic views of the Chisos Mountains, the Rio Grande River, it just goes on and on. Hole 13 is a par 3 that measures about 155 but has an elevated tee of nearly 150 feet. Hole 15 makes a turn that brings you to the clubhouse right on the Rio Grande on holes 16, 17 & 18.

I wish I could explain what a unique course this place really is. It is in the middle of nowhere, but anyone that enjoys golf is doing themselves a disservice by not making time to go out and enjoy some time at Lajitas. We teed off at 8:00 all three mornings and were through before the desert heat took over for the afternoon. Probably a place you want to get to by early June or hold off and go out toward the end of September.

If anyone has any questions I'll be glad to answer them.

Wow. Looks outstanding! It's 3.5 hrs from here for me. I think I'm going to have to do this.

Yep- great course. This is actually the hottest part of the year out there. As the summer goes along, they get a little cooler compared to us in Houston so an August trip might not be the worst thing in the world.

Where did you travel from and what is the best way to get there if you don't have a private plane? I am in Dallas.

Its isolated as hell. I flew into midland-odessa but explored some stuff along the way (ft davis, bolmerhea, etc). You can probably take a puddle jumper to a regional airport closer but might be expensive.

I did the same as Gaga- flew to Midland then drove down. It's about a 4 hour or so drive from Midland, but the route through Presidio through the mountains was voted the #3 most scenic drive in the US. Going down through Alpine isn't bad either.

I live in Junction so we drove I-10 to Ft. Stockton and on to Alpine. Turned south at Alpine and went through Study Butte and Terlingua to Lajitas. From Junction it is about a 5 1/2 hour drive with stopping for a sit down lunch. Not too bad from this area. I would think from DFW the fastest drive would be to Midland/Alpine/Lajitas.

FYI the Lajitas airport is closed until August for repairs and expansion. When the airport is open it is about a 1 to 1 1/2 hour flight by private plane from Junction.

I played in a tournament there in January years ago. It was around 38 degrees when we teed off at 7:30 but by the back nine we were in short sleeves.

SW--if you played it years ago you need to go back. The course is nothing like it was before the 2008 flood wiped it out. Completely new design and a whole different level of maintenance. Now the weather.....that's probably the exact same across time

How many hours from DFW you think? And what are the rates for lodging/golf etc.

Here are some pictures from this weekend. This is easily the best course I have ever played. It got hot but it was definitely worth it.

The elevated tee boxes on some of these holes are incredible.

Here is the 649 yard par 5. You can see the green off to the right and the first cut of fairway off to the left.

I think this par 3 is 150 yds. It played about 115-120. Talk about a buried sand shot when you hit that bunker.

This is a 430 yard par 4 that I put about 60 yds out.

Did you rent rooms or one of the villas?

I think I read that green fees are around $130. They do golf packages, as well.

It really is a great place. When I hit my drive on that long par 5, it felt like my ball hung in the air forever before coming down.

There were 3 couples so we just rented a villa which was really cool, it is probably a 3 minute drive from the rest of the resort.

Yep. I teed up a few extra balls just because it was so fun. I would tell myself to count how long the ball was in the air, but I would forget everytime as I just watched my ball keep going and going.
