If I were Watson I sure would take Mickelson ahead of Tiger.

Unless one of them starts playing well why would you bother with either unless you're considering TV ratings (and they probably will as USGA mentioned on the other thread).

Everyone always gives Tiger hell over his Ryder Cup record but Mickelson's is just as bad.

Much like Tiger, Phil is not playing well nor has he been stellar in The Ryder Cup. I say no.

I saw Phil, when asked if he should be picked, said he wanted to make the team on his own. I like that answer.

For the guys saying don't take Tiger and Phil, who do you want on the team instead? Phil is 10th in the standings right now, the other 3 guys next in line in the points are Reed, Brendon Todd and Chris Kirk. Sorry, but there is no freaking way you take Chris Kirk or Brendon freaking Todd over Tiger or Phil. Somebody can get hot over the next 5 or 6 weeks before the pick has to be made, but right now you definitely take Phil and most likely Tiger just because there is nobody else.

In Phil's last three tournaments he has finished 23rd , 28th , 11th.Not great , but not too bad.I would pick him in match play , no doubt.

Good question.

I think, in fairness, Phil will be picked.

Here are some guys deserving consideration. All of whom have positives AND negatives. Keep in mind, the course this year is Gleneagles. Not by the ocean but in the sandy links style of course.

Steve Stricker: consistently playing very well, but not playing much, and skipped the Open. Possibly.

Patrick Reed: next in line in points, but not playing well now. I say no.

Ryan Moore: High on the points list and played The Open very well (12th) but not exactly lighting it up. I say no.

Eric Compton: 20th on the points list and played the US Open and The Open well. That pesky heart issue. I say no way.

That's the problem all right............not much quality depth.

Phil and Steve would be my choices. Not very exciting picks are they??

In the other thread, you pointed out Tiger's crappy record in the Ryder Cup. And here you want Stricker who has a record of 3-7-1 (0-4-0 in the 2012 Ryder Cup).

I'd put money that you'll see Tiger playing well in the next few tournaments.

Stricker was TERRIBLE in the 2012 Ryder Cup. Doesn't mean he'd be terrible in this one, just saying.

Of course Tom will pick Phil. He's probably the most "no brainer" of his three captain's picks. He and Keegan were awesome at the 2012 Ryder Cup and 2013 President's Cup. Given America's difficulty in team competition over the past two decades, no reason to mess up a good thing.

Honestly probably our best hope at the RC is that Mickelson and Woods both stay home, Keegan Bradley gets hot, and Jordan Spieth turns out to be for our side what Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter have been for the Euros.

I said I wouldn't pick Tiger primarily because he wasn't playing well coming off injury. Secondary to that, I pointed to his Ryder Cup record to show that he was no Ian Poulter, who suddently flips a magic switch in the Ryder Cup.

The other possibility is taking two young rookies from the likes of Reed, Todd, English, and Moore, and hope one of them turns into the next Ian Poulter. I'd be inclined to do that if I was captain, but Tom isn't going to do that, so I guess Phil and Steve. If Tiger comes alive, scratch Steve and insert Tiger.

......the '08 US Open is raising its hand. Tom may catch lightning in a bottle by picking Tiger. And in that tourney he was ****ing falling over all day. He looked extremely healthy this week.
