How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hey Guys,

Im looking into making a bit more of an effort to choose the right ball. Normally, I will buy the lowest end ball I can find or get reloaded balls. My handicap is 20 and my miss off the tee is leaving it out to the right, sometimes really bad. I am curious what you guys take is on choosing the right ball. Does a ball really make much of a difference for someone my game? Does anyone have a suggestion for what ball I should use? What other info would I need to provide you?

thanks for the help

Anyone have the link the the recent ball discussion thread? It had spin charts for low, mid, and high end priced golf balls.

I would look there...it has everything that you probably need to know.

I would suggest shopping for a middle or left ball instead of a right ball.

Actually, the post above is correct. As you'll see when you find the thread, there was a pretty big debate on high end vs. low end balls, so I don't think there is a right answer to give you there. How is your distance and clubhead speed?

I once went searching for a ball that wouldn't miss to the right and never found one. Honestly, all balls are pretty low spin with the driver so I wouldn't worry about that when making your decision.

My distance is pretty good. I drive 275, club head speed was 105 but i measured it at Erwin Watts in one of their bays, not sure if thats very accurate.

After reading online and some ball discussion threads here, Im strongly leaning towards the Bridgestone E6 Series. I would love some feedback from anyone that has an opinion on the ball.

e6 is a good ball. I don't think it flies noticably straighter like they would have you believe but it is durable and spins enough to hold the green with a mid-iron. Based on my limited and uninterested observation, it seems like one of the most popular mid-grade balls out there.

I have recently become a Bridgestone fan. The e-series is good the B330 is great. I played a low end ball before and had a lot of trouble keeping them on the green.

One note though: I had to adjust some of my shorter shots to adapt to the "stickier" balls.

Played the e5 and it was very good. Buddy plays the e6 and likes it as well. $26/doz is a good price too IMO.

I don't think ball matters to a 20 handicap. It isn't going to make that much difference.

Explain how you think it will help...?

I've been playing the e5 predominantly this year. I am enjoying it, and if/when you find that thread, it has a great deal of praise for them.

I just bought some e6's for the first time a couple of weeks ago, great ball for the price.

I bought them at Wal-Mart for $26/doz. and they came with a free sleeve of B330's. Just an FYI.

I think it could definitely help. When I used to play the cheapest balls I could find (as a 20 handicapper) I would have a lot of problems keeping the ball on the green when I did hit a good shot. It didn't stop me from hitting bad shots, but when I hit the green it would stay on with a good ball and roll off the back with a crappy one. No matter what course you play, you're going to have some forced carries and you can't always land it short and run it on.

No ball will eliminate a slice and a typical bogey golfer probably won't be able to take advantage of the greenside spin of a ProV1, but I think anyone who can hit a good iron shot would benefit by playing a ball that will bite on the green with an iron.

If your handicap is a 20 and your leaving it way out right, I would worry about fixing that so your do not keep losing balls off the tee which will save you a lot of money in the long run. Fix your game first, then worry about the kind of ball you use.

Buy logo overruns at Golfsmith , or their Snake Eyes brand.Great balls , great price. And then use the money you save to go to a great short game clinic near where you live. That 20 handicap will probably go down to around 14 fast , then the ball might make a slight difference ,but those mentioned will still be just fine.

I love the e5 and have played it mostly this year and don't think I'll change any time soon. Dad loves he e6.

I ordered them from golfballs.com and got buy 3 dozen get a dozen free and then they emailed me about logo overrun e5s for 17$/dozen and ordered 5 more dozen.

but with a 20+ handicap, how many times is this happening? That's my point...do you want to spend more and more money on balls (that you are going to lose when you hit a bad shot), just so the infrequent good shots stay on the green better?

If you are hitting that many good shots, then your handicap is not going to be 20.

If you start hitting enough good shots to where the majority of your round is trying to get up and down for pars, then you will be in the 12-16 handicap range, not 20+. When this happens then I would buy your argument that you need to switch balls.

I can hit a solid shot with a pinnacle and it will spin enough to stay on the green. You cannot expect a shot that is poorly struck on the club face that happens to find the green on the first bounce to behave like it was hit squarely. If I hit a ProV1x on the toe, with a draw - it's going long left once it hits. The ball doesn't magically stay on the green because its a ProV1x.

I see what you're saying, Cap. If you're basing the decision purely on value then I'd say the vast majority of us should be playing cheaper equipment through the whole bag and a 20-handicap is probably not going to get a ton of value by spending money on a better ball. But as to whether it would make a difference, I think it could. I liked it when my good shots were rewarded after I switched to something that spun a little more with the irons.

Subjective analysis….but I played some Pro V1’s a few weeks back and they really seamed to stop on the greens very quickly. Like 1 bounce and stop with in a few feet. This was both with 100+ yard approach shots and close in chips.

The last two times I played (18 and local Par 3) I played a Titleist DT Solo and they seemed to roll a lot more on the greens than the Pro V1. It was a bit frustrating a time or two as I had nice chips that just would not stop and rolled away from the hole. But then on a few tee/approach shots I hit a bit short and they bounced onto the green rolled along nicely closer to the hole. The Pro V1 likely would have stopped and left me off or a much longer putt.

I’ll probably stick with the DT just so I have a consistent ball each time I play. The more variables I can eliminate from my game, the better! If I find myself rolling off or chipping and rolling away on a consistent basis then I’ll look at switching to a Pro V1 or something that will give me more control on the greens.

i think it makes a lot of sense to find one ball that you like and try to play it exclusively. as someone said, it takes a variable out of the equation. lessons would obviously be a bigger help to lowering your handicap, but with sites like LGB, you can get decent golf balls for pretty damn cheap.

as for balls to try, i've settled into the callaway chrome+ LGB has a bucket of 50 of the 2nd quality for $33. that's about $8/dozen.

Yup. I'm a hack and playing a ProV1x because they are so cheap there.

That said, debating if it's the best ball for my game so will try some others. I have some e6's from the past and I seem to get 20+ yards more on my drives with them. Notice the difference around the green though.
