Buddy of mine is coming into town this weekend. We already have Friday and Sunday rounds set up. We are thinking of venturing somewhere new and cool for our Saturday round.

Options so far, with commute times and afternoon rates to measure value between them:

1. The Bridges, Gunther - This is my frontrunner. 37 min. $49.
2. Iron Horse, North Richland Hills - 1 hour. $54-$64.
3. Country View GC, Lancaster - 55m. $29.
4. Tierra Verde, Arlington - 1h5m. $70, $47 after 3pm. Steep.
5. Any other recs...I live in Allen.

I have only played Iron Horse and Tierra Verde but I would recommend both of them. Tierra Verde is an awesome course. Probably one of my top 10 favorite courses I've played. Iron Horse I played a lot in high school and it is a good course not quite as good as Tierra Verde and I'm not sure the condition of it with all the construction around it but its always a fun course. But if youre willing to spend a little bit more I would highly recommend Tierra Verde. Granted I havent played there in a few years but when I did it was awesome. Enjoy your rounds.

Don't play the Bridges. There are 1,000's and 1,000's of grasshoppers out there. No matter if you're on the cart part or fairway. It's pretty much a beating dealing with them jumping in your cart, face, hitting you, etc. I was out there three weeks ago and left after the eight hole.

Either Bridges or TV.

I didn't have an issue with the grasshoppers at the Bridges, but they are all over the place. The wind is more of an issue there. Be prepared for 30MPH winds at least.

TV is a better course, IMO, if you don't mind the extra 30 min commute each way.

Also, I live really close to Heritage Ranch. I meant to list that one as well. Twilight for $50 out there, 10m commute. Still have not tried this one.

Haven't played Heritage in a few years, but it was always in great condition.

Good scores can be had, but there are some trouble spots. Couple of short par 4's that are good risk reward.

Yes, Tribute is definitely for a special occasion but it is AWESOME. One of the most fun courses I've ever played.

I will try Tribute out another time, definitely on some sort of special occasion. This weekend is being geared towards volume, both in golf and most likely alcohol. (Although Sunday is a serious round so none on that day)

Have played all of them recently (except Heritage)...

Tierra Verde: This course is perhaps the course that would yield the best score of the bunch, not necessarily the easiest. Played it a couple weeks ago and everything was in great shape. Good staff, good cart girls, overall good course. BUT if you're only 10 min away from HR then this will be a heck of a drive.

WestRidge: played "the Diablo" scramble there this Saturday morning and it was an awesome set up. Played the course set up "as difficult as possible", crazy tees and even crazier pin placements. Fun course, but can be slow going. GPS in the carts is a plus.

Heritage Ranch: FANTASTIC COURSE. Haven't played there in about 6-7 months, but this has always been a favorite of mine in the area (I'm a member at Golf Club of McKinney). From the tips this is a great challenge, and as another poster said some of the holes are really fun. Sometimes a little slow, but depends on the time/day.

The Bridges: Another one of my favorites when I have all day to make the trip. A BEAST from the tips (7,800+) especially when the wind is howling on top of that plateau. Each time I've been there it seems like we are the only group on the course. Holes 1-3 usually set the tone for the day, and hole 18 is incredible.

Iron Horse: Grew up in Colleyville/H-E-B area and played this a lot growing up. Haven't played there since early Spring, but is a fun layout and the Fairways/Greens/Tee Boxes are usually well kept. Also has a $25 "anniversary" deal going on right now.

Some others that I didn't see mentioned that you might want to check out:

Fossil Creek
Frisco Lakes
Coyote Ridge
Ridgeview Ranch
