Comment on another thread got me wondering...

Everyone post their stock carry and stock distance with a 7i (if you know it).

Unfortunately the range/swing improvement doesn't always carry over to my game, so I lose a club from range to course

Carry: 135-150
Distance: 140-155

Should be a longer hitter at 6'3", but my good striking days come and go. It's a work in progress.

I have used it for everything from greenside chipping to cutting through rough to get a knuckle ball shot.

7i carry- 170 normal, 180 hard swing, 155 punch.

bump and run most effective from about 30 out or a putting swing from just off the green.

Still hasn't given me a hole in one...

Carry: 186-190
Distance: 186-190

I'd need some hard ground to get much roll out of a 7iron

Perfect lie
No wind
Over 80* outside
Middle of fairway
Perfect backswing
Perfect transition
Perfect contact
Dead center of the ball (equator)

Carry = 100 yards
Total = 200 yards

Through the green and taking a penalty stroke.

Steel stiff shaft

Carry- 170-180 (Depends on playing fade or draw)
Distance- 175-185 (Same as above determines rollout as well as course conditions)

7i

carry - roll
150 - 155 easy swing (when my game is going downhill)
160 - 165 95% swing (what I swing most)
100 - 170 full swing (when the beer is flowing)

Stock, normal swing 7i is right about 175 carry & total. I can definitely crank it over 180, if necessary, but I'd much rather choke down on a 6i for that distance.

I sometimes will hit a chip and run with it, if I need to carry a sprinkler head on the fringe or if the grain of the fringe is growing directly into me, for example. But if I'm close enough to the green where I'm considering a chip and run with the 7i, I'm more likely to putt it.

Punch it out of trees, around trees, over trees, etc...it's good for all that too.

Occasionally, I'll intentionally blade it if I really need a 5i or 6i and I'm too lazy to go back to the cart. More likely to do this on a layup shot than into a green.

No idea on carry distance, just know that my 7i ends up about 160 if I hit it straight and well (so maybe 5% of the time).

I really don't have a lot of uses for it though, just a regular swing is all I ever do with it. It hit my 8 and 6 much better, so if I need to punch or do something else around that distance, I just use one of those.

7i = 190 sea level (205 Denver)

I can hit it a little further if necessary, which often happens because I've had a shaky relationship with my 6i for the better part of two decades.

Extrapolating the ridiculous claims, everyone here can hit their 3i 245 yds dead straight.

You mean back in high school, right?

AggieFox, I hit my irons long and always have...well i hit wedge thru 6i long and solid. I struggle with long irons and driver because of my steep/loop swing. I am still learning of course because that is golf. I am on year 7 playing but I have learned to avoid slices and being able to work the ball with fades and draws, which is easier I think with the shorter irons.

But like most of the guys are saying you can choose any club to work differently for different shots. My preferred club for comfort and making shots happens to be an 8i. It is my favorite club. Its all about confidence when it comes to clubs, distance, and shots.

Pure 7 iron for me is 150 carry, very little roll, I normally hit shots high. chance of occurrence, 17%

Normal 7, push fade to dead pull, 140 with another 5 yards of carry with some side spin or 160 deep left. Chance of occurrence, 80%, mostly push fade.

Remaining 3%, major blade, depends what is in front of the green for total carry.

Both aces have come with my 7 iron though.

Like to use it has a punch layup, but out of the woods and bad lies tend to use my 5. Rarely around the green, hood my A wedge instead.

My 7i goes about 150yds. If I hit it pure, which is rare, it goes 160yds.

I hit my 7i about 165 total distance. Not sure about carry.

If I crush it, probably can go to about 175. I would be very comfortable getting 8 out of 10 shots with a 7i and getting to 165-170 range.

I'd say somewhere between 130 and 200 depending on lie, wind, shot shape, pin location, elevation, temperature, Advil consumption, inebriation, and all those other real life variables that make questions like this silly.

Favorite club in my bag, total distance around 165 or so, but I normally hit it solid...not so much for the rest of my clubs

7-iron is the longest of what I consider my middle clubs. If I have to hit over a tree or have to worry about the lip of a fairway bunker, I usually go no longer than a 7-iron.

Distance wise I feel comfortable using it from 140-160. For whatever reason I don't really like to bump and run with it... if I want to take it in low from 30 yards short of the green I feel much more confident with an 8 or a 9.

The 7-iron is also the shortest club that I feel like I can hit a really good punch-hook, but I usually take a 5-iron for those shots.

I hood the 7 iron, and take a full swing. Low (5 feet of the ground) hook that carries 80 yards and rolls 100 yards.

155 carry with my normal 80-85% effort iron swing. I play 11 year old irons (Ping i3+) and hit my irons fairly high. Given the varous lofts and shaft lengths across brands/versions, 7 iron dick measuring contests aren't as easy as they used to be.

This....the number of 300+ drivers and 170yd 7I is abnormally high around here. I'm sure some of you can do that, but not with much accuracy or consistancy....or were we just posting what we can do 1 in 20 times .... or that one time at the range when no one was looking.

I suck. I hit my 7i about 140-145....I'll blame the Torrey Pines ocean air

Extra distance on the irons is all about "shaft lean" and "knuckles down". Compressing the ball actually delofts the club , hence greater distance.
