What's comical is that these club manufacturers even coerce respected pros to brag about the distance of their latest irons. For example, Ernie Els brags that the Adam's irons he's playing are "long" in his current commercial spot.
Why is the golfing public so freeking obsessed with the distance of their irons? If you want to hit the ball further, grab a different stick. It's not rocket science. The sad part is that people DO buy into the hype of longer/hotter irons, or the manufacturers wouldn't be spending huge dollars promoting iron distances.
I think we'll see hell freeze over before Taylormade touts their newest irons as "consistent, reliable, and forgiving" without mentioning distance.
The ONLY clubs that I want to gain distance with are my driver and 3W and even the 3W is debatable. Most importantly, I want my 3W to make the ball travel a specific and predictable distance. 5 extra yards on a couple par 5's MIGHT save me a stroke once every 10 rounds -- and even that is doubtful.
To make fun of this advertising trend, someone should make a parody commercial touting how "hot" their putters are. Have some guy on TV bragging that he can now hit 200' putts.
