Phil Garner. I met him at OK State in 2002. The Tigers had just fired him, and Ty was playing for us. I wound up talking to him for about 30 minutes as we'd both gotten to Allie P. Reynolds before it was open. Turns out, they guy loves college baseball, being around college kids, etc. Since then, I've always wondered if he'd make a good college skipper.

Sounds like a done deal. Don't bother with interview. I've seen enough.

Brian O'Connor -Virginia - Did not think this was a realistic option except that he is underpaid.

Dan McDonnell - Louisville

As Luke has stated RC is probably not going anywhere after this season so these two might be a good option in a year or two, done a good job in their short stints as head coaches.

Todd Whitting - Cougar High

David Pierce - Sam Houston State

I like all 4 of those

But, With Hyman in charge, Childress isn't going anywhere regardless of how this season plays out

Don't think that RC is going anywhere either but Yes Phil Garner would probably make a great college coach.

Phil Garner has zero track record as a college coach

Kind of like Mike Sherman had zero track record as a college (head) coach

Not gonna happen, nor should it...

We are not firing a softball coach that took us to the championship series and was in the top ten as recently as a couple of weeks ago.

Childress also is going nowhere after this season.

So the OP is spinning his wheels for no reason.
Captain Pablo

I disagree about spinning wheels

I know you're a huge Childress supporter, but you're in the minority

The program is stagnant and mediocre

It's perfectly natural the fan base at some point starts wanting a change, and speculating on a replacement

Isn't Phil Garner already collecting social security? Hardly the time to take your first job as a college coach.

According to Google - Phil Garner is 65

It is statements like this that drive me crazy and why I come across as a RC supporter. Is the program where we all want it to be? No, on the other hand it does not mean the program is mediocre or stagnant. It also does not mean that the fan base shouldn't be restless either and thinking about possible replacements.

No way a college team full of kids from snow covered states should beat us like they did.

UK hasn't played well on Sundays (not enough pitching) and the win was expected. But what I saw on Saturday was NOT Aggie baseball.

Eric Reed and the rest of his teammates ain't complaining about the new bats. I saw three homers by a team (yes, one was inside the park) and many other balls hit to the gap.

Pulling for RC to place the necessary adjustments to SEC play while he is here. Hope he can do it.

Not pleased the past couple years with either softball or baseball performance. Is it recruits, coaching? Cannot be anything else. We need to solve the problem, Eric.

You'd have to assume as much. I'd guess around 90% of the fan base was up in arms over all things Kennedy and attendance was in the gutter and he's coming back next year.

Childress has built up some goodwill and attendance isn't suffering. I'd be surprised if his seat is even hot.

Ag Fan, Sure but I am adding up performance over the past 5 years. We just do not deliver at the plate when we need. Especially in baseball. Hitting has been bad especially hitting into double plays.

What do you mean that he has built goodwill?

Do you think he has widespread support among the fan base?

What is his relationship with Texas HS coaches and JUCO coaches?

You're right. We're not stagnant. We're trending downward

As far as mediocre, yeah, we are.

Folks, Hyman is looking at his retirement options not replacement coaches.

Manage your expectations.

That likely won't get you fired here, unless Hyman brings the hammer to baseball in ways he isn't prepared to do in basketball. Coming from South Carolina, maybe he will, but seeing as he gave Childress an extension last season I doubt it. Paid attendance through March was Top 10 (9th) in the nation. We aren't checking a lot of the "get fired by Hyman" boxes here, if we even know that those exist.

And uh oh, Hyman uttering words of 'mediocrity':

quote:

Texas A&M will extend Childress’ existing contract by two years through the 2018 season.

“As a member of the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee, I have had the opportunity to interact with many coaches across the country,” Hyman said. “A common theme is that Rob Childress is one of college baseball’s most-respected coaches. You have to look no further than seven NCAA appearances over his eight years at Texas A&M and a recent trip to the College World Series.”

I don't even know why that extension was made, considering you had years before the original was up.

The idea that we should just assume Childress is safe and that Hyman is not going to do anything is exactly the state of mind that Hyman wants from the fanbase. He wants us to just assume that the coach is safe so that we will sit idly by and become apathetic. He has so distanced himself from the fans that it makes us as fans feel powerless so we give up. Say what you want about Bill Byrne, but he made fans feel like their voices were heard. He responded to your emails (or one of his people did at least). He was visible at athletic events and fundraisers. He was accessible and he also communicated to the fans more regularly. That gave us as fans the mindset that what we think and say matters so we said a lot. Think about the uproar here on the SEC issues and the Texas/LHN issues. Even the end of the Sherman era and even our discontent over where Turgeon was taking the basketball program. We were louder/more discontent with Turgeon on the internet than we are with Kennedy and a lot of that has to do with the fans mindset with regards to whether or not we think our opinion will be heard.

Now, I will get off that soap box...

The UVA guy seems like the best option posted so far. The Louisville guys seems 'ok' but far from a sure thing. The Houston coach seems like a pretty big reach as does the Sam coach. I am thinking we should be looking at trying to outpay someone for a proven winner and the UVA coach is the only one I have seen suggested that fits this bill.

They did it to Florida a few weeks ago, too (and beat them on Sunday). They did it to South Carolina before that.

I'm not happy, but I'm always a little irked by the "no way xxx team should ever do xxx to us."

We're not complaining too much about the bats right now, either. Tied with LSU for the 2nd most runs scored by any SEC team this season.

I realize we're streaky, I realize we "only" scored 3 and 4 runs in our two losses, but good golly, its the pitching that's the issue to pick out if we're going to pick out an issue.

Give up 11 runs on Saturday? That's ****. And we're hardly winning any of the 6-3 decisions because we can hardly hold a team to under 5 or 6 runs right now.

Not sure why everytime replacing Childress comes up, Kennedy has to be brought into the conversation. Regardless of whether Kennedy should or should not be replaced, they are two independent very different situations. Childress has been here nine years with the same history of bad hitting, horrible baserunning, poor execution and questionable in-game decisions. He has changed assistant coaches, but the problems still persist. So you can't point at anyone but RC. I have heard from recruits parents that their high school and select coaches tell them A&M is a hitter's graveyard and have read other people's posts on here that they have heard similar comments. If a successful program is measured by making a regional (being one of the 64 best teams) most of the time, then I guess Childress is your man. But sitting in one of the 3-4 biggest hotbeds in the country for recruiting with a $21 million renovated stadium and the fan support at A&M, making a regional should not be considered the measuing stick of success.

I'm good with either one I just need to know whether to be happy in my liver, or in my trousers.
