G.R. Hinsley is once again the clean-up hitter for arguably the best collegiate summer team in the nation...and he promptly gets the game winning 2-RBI single in last night's season opener.

He was left off the travel squad this weekend so he joined the Bombers, and he's well on his way to being the greatest run producer in TCL history...and he got all of 7 at-bats this season for the Aggies.

There are summer superstars in every collegiate league across the fruited plain. Many of them return to campus and forget how to play. Let's tap the brakes on the conspiracy angle.

He was a very accomplished hitter at every level he played at. It's odd he never got a chance here while a lot of other guys did.

Sandman, you obviously don't know anything about baseball. Take a few minutes and read Hinsley's bio. Oh, players don't forget how to play when they get back to campus. That is the most inane thing I have ever heard.

As is every other player to ever receive division 1 scholarship money. I'm not sure that he's not capable, I just think the conspiracy garbage is ridiculous. Childress needs to win or he has to sell his house. If he showed the moxy to drive in runs in the SEC I'm guessing he would play. Just a guess.

Melton got over 100 ABs while batting .240 and slugging sub-.300

Hinsley got 7 ABs

Thoughts?

Other than the fact that Melton showed quite well in real action in the prior season? He eventually got shelved too.

What does last year have to do with this year? You just said guys forget how to play baseball from season to season.

Even stranger...in his last start for A&M early in the season, he went 1-2 with a walk and the one time he was retired was on a liner to SS.

So he gets on-base twice and lines out, and he never sees the starting lineup again.

Sigh. He did it on campus. Not in summer ball. He gets the benefit of the doubt until he doesn't.

Except I just posted links showing that Hinsley's success wasn't limited to summer baseball.

Clearly Mark and basketball completely dismiss (or aren't aware), of the large number of chances these guys get in the fall and spring workouts to earn AB's in the spring. They don't just roll the balls out and start the guys with the best HS and Juco stats on opening weekend.

He did not register a plate appearance this season against an SEC team. Oh, and in his last appearance in the A&M lineup on April 16 in a mid-week game, Hinsley's last at-bat this season was an RBI sac fly. He also walked.

So in seven official at-bats, he drew two walks, had a single, and hit an RBI sac fly. IN fall ball, he consistently hit in the clean-up position for one of the split squads and had several big hits in key situations during the Fall Series.

Obviously, the issue was personality related in some way.

So by the discussion I'm reading, I assume all of you are involved with the baseball team in some sort of coach capacity?

How the eff do you know that a guy that happens to have 8 games worth of good stats is not some kind of team cancer or complete blackhole of team energy?

By all means, please enlighten me if you have insider knowledge. I will immediately apologize for objecting your views.

He was obviously on the outs with the coaching staff for some reason?

Where do you play him? I think that's the biggest issue. He wasn't going to play 1B with Cole over there...not going to play CF or RF. The only 2 spots possible were LF or DH. From what I've seen he's just not that great in the OF...and argue all you want but for the most part this year, Statum did a nice job in LF. That leaves DH and a host of guys you can argue for/against in that spot.

In the end I like GR and wish he would have gotten more chances to prove himself this year. I hope he comes back. That being said, I also think the coaches want to win and put the guys on the field they think can get it done. For whatever reason GR wasn't in the mix this year. Time to move on....for those of us interested we will follow GR with the Bombers to see how it goes, but let's not have a daily update of GR's summer stats with the "conspiracy theory/why didn't he get a chance/RC's an idiot for not playing him" theme.

Well, this is a baseball discussion board. One of the team's top recruits this year has been productive in his JUCO years, summer ball wooden bat league, fall ball, and even in the limited playing time this spring. I watched multiple practices and scrimmages in the fall and the guy was productive and practicing as the clean-up hitter.

You call it a conspiracy theory. I call it a curiosity. And I'm even more curious when the guy once again is given the opportunity to play and he delivers...again.

It's not like big sticks Gideon and Melton were hot and simply were too good to take out of the lineup. Both guys combined hit one home run and hit about .220, yet they were given multiple opportunities to produce and snap out of it.

Yes, I do think it's an interesting and relevant topic of discussion. Had the guy struggled last fall or one of these big bats were hitting .320 with 9 homers and 44 RBI's, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Oh, in game two of the Bombers' season last night, Hinsley got his 3rd RBI of the season in the his first at-bat. With the Bombers trailing by one in the 8th, Hinsley gets on-base with a walk and scores the tying run.

What's the rules for regional travel in baseball? I thought the team was allowed to bring more players than normal?

Might have been his only shot at going to a college regional.

I wanted to see him play more but obliviously he wasn't on the coaches good side. And production for the bombers doesn't equal production for the Ags; but I'm not naive enough to think that 7 non-conference at bats is anywhere close enough to determine whether he could get it done of not.

I think the thing that I don't like about these threads is the lack of any information regarding the reason. OK, we've got a prospect whose numbers would have suggested that he had something to contribute. Sure, it's interesting that he didn't, but unless you've got some inside information on why, then I don't really see the point in bringing this up every time we lose a game. Every program has highly touted guys who don't end up panning out. That's not a story.

When someone comes on here an gives us some scoop as to why Hinsley didn't get more playing time, that's a story that I'll certainly be interested in that. But, we've seen this same thread, with nothing but speculation, it seems on a weekly basis for a while now--there's nothing new in this one. I don't see why the failure to have Hinsley be a contributor is particularly more significant than any of our other offensive failings (of which there are several to choose from).

Absolutely. Talked to a players dad last season, and this was confirmed. I'm tired of Sawyers. The guys aren't progressing at all in multiple years. It's time for Sawyers to hit the road.

Well, there is new news. Hinsley is starting where he left off from last summer in a wood bat league where offensive numbers are typically much less than in the college season with composite bats.

What I was told is that the staff did not feel his practice habits in January/February were where they should have been, and thus was benched early in the season and simply his name was rarely added to the magic 8-ball when the lineup was made in those first few weeks. He was kind of the forgotten man after that, and when insiders and reporters would ask about him, the staff never gave a clear reason for his situation.

But this is relevant, because what happened to him is seen by other players and recruits, and their parents. Childress is seen as a hard ass and someone that can be difficult to get along with if you don't do things exactly his way. Now, I had coaches like that all the time when I was playing sports 30-40 years ago and it was an effective approach back then. We all dealt with it.

But in this era of elite team youth baseball where kids and parents live and breath the sport 24-7 and they talk to other parents and elite coaches, they shy away from the hard-nosed "my way or the highway" college coach because these kids and their families have been playing and doing things their way for 10 years. Like it or not, today's player doesn't want a screamer or an in-your-face coach.

So this is relevant because a very good high profile player in this state was shelved by this staff for what they (elite ball coaches, parents of current recruits, etc.) perceive is a non-performance issue. That's precisely why these elite D-1 kids from College Station are leaving town and playing for rival programs...and it's precisely why A&M is struggling to stack talent in this program.

Talent and depth....recruiting.

Well, given that he's a senior and is subject to the new transfer rules, I'm guessing he'll either push to get drafted in the late rounds and bolt, or he returns and both parties agree to hit the reset button.
