Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha hasn't made a start since June 17 thanks to an increasingly puzzling shoulder malady. It's being termed a "stress reaction" to the scapula bone, but it's an injury that, absent rest and treatment, carries the risk of progressing into other, more serious conditions. Here's more from the excellent Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

The immediate plan for Wacha is two weeks of rest and a re-evaluation at the end of that stretch that will include another series of scans of his rotator cuff and scapula.

Glad that they are being so diligent in his care. Hope that rest is the answer. Thanks for the update.

I agree that it is good that they are being patient with him. But it does seem to be dragging on, hopefully rest is the cure for this.

ST. LOUIS -- Right-hander Michael Wacha is scheduled for a follow-up MRI on his pitching shoulder Monday, after which the Cardinals will be able to determine whether he can begin a throwing program.

This will be the third MRI for Wacha in a month's span. The first, taken when Wacha was dealing with some shoulder fatigue, identified a stress reaction in his right shoulder. He was prescribed two weeks of rest, after which Wacha had another MRI to see if the area had begun to heal.

It had, but not enough to be cleared to resume throwing. The Cardinals opted to have Wacha rest for another two weeks before reevaluating Monday.

The timing of this follow-up visit is crucial, too, as it could play into the club's strategy at the Trade Deadline. To this point, the Cardinals have maintained that they do not feel they have to add starting pitching before the end of the month. But if Wacha is still not ready to throw, the organization could change that stance.

Wacha said Saturday that while he cannot throw, he has stayed busy with therapy and other weight-room exercises.

Field reporter on the Cards telecast just said that Wacha had a CT scan yesterday. "The results were positive"... whatever that means. They expect him back in early September.

I thought a CT Scan was about the head etc. and not the arm. ???

ST. LOUIS -- With approval from the medical staff after they read the results of Monday's MRI exam, Michael Wacha plans to increase his strength exercises over the next two weeks with the hope that he'll then be cleared to begin a throwing program.

If all goes as the Cardinals hope, Wacha will resume throwing during the first full week of August, which would then put him on schedule to return to the Cards' rotation in early September. Wacha, who last pitched on June 17, has been nursing a stress reaction in his right shoulder.

Wacha said he didn't even need confirmation from an MRI to know that his shoulder was improving.

"I don't feel [tightness] now," Wacha said. "There were times that I could feel it just around the house doing casual things. But that's all gone for sure."
