High Achieving Women Changing Last Names Post Wedding

This is a question for the ladies.

I am always surprised when high profile women like many in sports who have achieved a lot, female movie stars, women in business etc change their names when they get married. Some do so before they become famous or high-profile.

What is the thinking? Why do they do so? Do they or do they not think it is against feminism? Do they struggle with this? How do they reconcile? Even many feminist women do this.

I am a man, I could never change my name. My wife changed her last name to mine. I actually like it, makes me feel she is committed to me. This was of course 20+ years ago.

Maybe women are more adjusting/adaptable/flexible than men in things like this?

This isn't really my board, but you seem to have some pretty serious issues with women. I'm interested to see how this thread goes down.

i knew a guy who combined the letters of his name with the letter of his wife name to form a new name. He was from washington state. What a ****.

My wife didn't change her name after we got married and I didn't really care. It made sense for a lot of reasons for including the value of her name.

Dont understand the point of getting married if youre going to be in two different families.

Maybe they just want to have the same last name as their children.

Just remind those women that they would rather have their dad's name instead of your husband...

that goes over REALLY well with them.

My wife took my name because it made her name better and she moved up in the alphabet since it begins with A.

Her sister married a guy with hyphenated last name and kept her maiden name. So she goes by Dr. B_______ E_____-L________. Feminism is stupid.

Im not sure its specifically feminism, it might just be good old fashion disdain for christianity and western civilization. So hot right now.

A colleague of mine took his husband's name. My uncle kept his bachelor(?) name. Based on those anecdotes, I can only assume that they flip a coin and are bound by whatever it lands on.

I specifically put "in regards to the last name when they get married?" to specifically limit references to dude's butts.

My wife's maiden name was 13 letters long.

My last name is 4 letters long.

She happily changed her name.

Many do a hyphenated last name.

My close friends did hyphenated, but their original last name is first.

So like

A_____ B____-C ______
and
A_____ C____- B______

I met a couple a while back that have a hyphenated last name.

He added her last name to his and she added his to hers.

It's odd.

That's just dumb.

Do the kids have hyphenated last names?
If so do her daughters have 2 hyphens when they get married? Or do they drop one of the hyphens?

Why would a woman who hates the patriarchy want to keep her oppressive father's last name?

Why would a woman who hates the patriarchy want to get legally bound to a man in the first place?

Seriously- if you have that many issues please just remove urself from the dating pool and make life easier for the rest of us men.

^^ and by this I don't mean jmac but women who have issues following traditional cultural norms^^

He has some major issue with women. He should return to India so he's fully back in his system and doesn't keep trying to understand more western cultures.

My older cousin did that. Like "Chris Evert-Lloyd". She hyphenated her maiden last name (which is the same as mine as our dads are brothers) and her husband's last name. Her husband didn't care either way. But now I see everywhere she has her married last name, not maiden last name. I guess it was too long to write.

She uses her maiden name after her divorce

I've seen where the wife keeps her maiden and hyphens the husbands to the end. So they each share his last name.

That's pretty common.

Him adding her last name to his so they have an "equal share" of the last name is weird.
