Is it really out of nowhere?

Hasn't he been hinting at the past 2 or 3 seasons?

Thought I remember both he and McVay mentioning retirement ever since they won the SB a few years ago.

A little overrated IMO. In his prime, JJ Watt was a better player. Of course, Donald was healthier and got a ring, so he will be regarded more highly. But, I don't believe he was as dominant as Watt was before injuries piled up on him.

Donald is a first ballot Hall-of-Famer. No argument.

But, I've seen his name thrown around with LT and Reggie and Mean Joe. Sorry, but he wasn't THAT good. Again, I don't think he was even the best defensive player of his era. Vintage Watt was a better player than Vintage Donald. I'll die on that hill.

What a ride. I figured he had a year or two more.

LT won rings and played in multiple super bowls
Mean Joe won rings and played in multiple super bowls
Reggie won a ring a played in multiple super bowls
Donald won a ring and played in multiple super bowls

Guess who didn't win a ring or play in multiple super bowls?

Take your homer glasses off and then maybe you can see it.

Let's look at both over the best four years of their career:

JJ Watt (2012-15)
315 tackles
250 solo tackles
119 tackles for loss
15 forced fumbles
10 fumble recoveries
69 sacks
41 passes defended (this number is ridiculous)
1 INT

Aaron Donald (2017-20)
193 tackles
129 solo tackles
74 tackles for loss
15 forced fumbles
2 fumble recoveries
57.5 sacks
5 passes defended
0 INT

It's amazing how quickly people have forgotten just how amazing Watt was at his best. Guess he should have played in Los Angeles.

I always thought that stretch with Watt put him in the convo for greatest defensive player of all time, certainly of this century. Both Watt and Donald are in the upper echelon of great players.

Actually, Watt bounced all over the place. Lined up inside a lot.

Regardless, both were defensive linemen, and Watt's numbers dwarf Donald's. Obvious who impacted the game more.

Nail on the head, though watt did play lots inside. You simply can't use numbers like this to try to compare the two.

Thats not a sleight at watt. He is an all time great, first ballot HoF, all century team etc etc.

But Donald is 1st team on "all time nfl lineup".
