regarding Adolph Hofner. See this album cover

The guy on the far left (bass player) is my grandfather. The fourth guy from the left (guitar) is my grandfather's brother.

I actually came across this album a year after my gradndfather died while I was in Luckenbach

For those who have not started or finished having children, I recommend you go back to your Czech hometown, visit the cemetary your ancestors are buried before you name your children. If you do, you will not only give them a proud name but also something to live up to... I wished I had done that after visiting the pioneer cemetary in Fredericksburg.

I knew an Emil in the Praha area. His brother built our house and was a great man.

This is a good idea. I've told my wife that when we have kids I have some aunts and uncles (some I never knew because they died before I was born) that I want to name the kids after. Uncles were Anton and Emil, aunts were Vlasta and Ludmila.

Just a reminder about the Czech mass for Sts. Cyril and Methodius feast day at Holy Trinity Catholic church in Corn Hill, followed by a sausage and sauerkraut, buttered potatoes and kolache meal. Make any donation you want, and the proceeds got seminarians in the Czech republic. I don't know for sure which day it is since the 14th is on a Saturday this year. Look at www.masstimes.org for more details
I won't be able to make it this year, so I hope some of the others of you will be able to go and enjoy it.

Kolach is singular, Kolache is plural, so I imagine it is the same with anything else Czech.

Never had them, but I've seen recepies online. Might have to try them one day.

Apples, peaches, pumpkin pie, if you're Czech holler I...Spanhel from central Texas. My grandparents would always drag me out to the SP hall (Star?) in Seaton. Didn't find a Czech wife so my kids are Czech-Mex.

I figured the Czech thread would be the best place to ask if anyone is directly related to the name I boxed in? I'm sure he's somehow related to me since we have the same last name. It's the 1937 A&M football roster btw.

If you go to Moravia or any other part of the Czech Rep...try to learn as much of the Czech language as you can...it really helps...signs, directions, stores, etc. I was in Roznov & Zlin (Moravia) last year.

Awesome thread. Being half-German and half Czech, and growing up in Shiner, I have much appreciation for this thread. I've always wondered what my dad was saying in Czech growing up. lol...based on a lot of the translations, it's a good thing he didn't say some of the things in English.

anyone ever eat jiternice (hog head sausage) growing up?

Also, has anyone ever heard an onion called a "Bohemian apple"?

"Being half-German and half Czech..."

Did one half of you want to beat up the other periodically, or is that only German/French crosses?

If you frequent the Czech Stop in Waco, try the Ole Czech Bakery. Its better. I heard about it here many years ago and only go there now. If you are heading North, take the road just past the Czech Stop and its a block down on your right.

Good time to add that there is a Lonestar Kolache place just West of 360 on 2244 here in Austin. Its not nearly as good as what you will find in West but, their pepperoni rolls are amazing.
