Trying to make WY decisions.

Looking at unit 33 or 41. Might try Cow calf 1st then try and draw Any tag. Currently have 6PP

Also have 6pp for antelope in WY that I need to burn. Was thinking maybe do antelope this year close to one of those units, then cow calf next year then Any tag in 2 years.....anyone have suggestions on that or a different unit to draw with 8-9 elk PP????
From your post I cant tell if you have 6 points now or 8-9 for elk or asking for rec this year or for two years from now. Either way I would be chasing elk in 41 not 33.

Just looking at hunt planner. It looks like with 8 points in Unit 33 you have 100% odds on drawing. It says same for 6 points so you would essentially be wasting 2 points on this unit. This unit looks to be more suited for antelope and has less public land.

Unit 41 bigger terrain 3700-11,500 with 85% public land of which 7.4% is wilderness.

Interesting Odds on this one:
Archery w 8 points 2.3% but with 9 jumps to 100%. 8.5 points on party 35%.
Rifle Early sept 1-Oct 14 8 points 5% but 9 points 53%.
Rifle mid Oct 15- Nov 4 8 points is 24% but 9 points 100%.
Rifle late Nov 5-Nov 20 8 pints 100% so was 7 and 6 was 30%.

If It was me I would be hunting elk in 41 and chasing speed goats elsewhere if needed.

A co-worker and I were discussing buying elk points, but I just don't know anything about Arizona.

I told him he's got until 11:59p Arizona time tonight to convince me...

In AZ, similar to other states, you have to purchase a general hunt/fish combo license to be able to apply - it's $160 and a point is $15. The license has to be active on the date of the draw deadline - you can set the date for it to be active when you purchase it (if purchased prior to draw deadline date). If it works out, their draw deadlines will overlap some years to where if you are applying for elk one year, the license will still be active for the next year's draw so you are able to hit two draws to get a point with one license

I'm just banking points for myself and the kiddos for the time being, may try to draw a tag next year

I am sitting at 3 points each for mule deer, antelope, and elk in WY. We're still deciding on mule deer and/or antelope in 2024, while drawing points for the rest.

I figure I am 3-5 years away from a bull elk hunt.

New Colorado Regulations are out.
- Nonresident tag allocations got reduced from 35% down to 25%. I don't disagree but will make point creep worse.
- Elk tags now $803
- A tag I use to draw 2nd choice will now take a point looks like.

NM does not do points.

We've never met, so I can't answer your other question.

The CO tag I typically draw takes 0 points and often has leftovers. How can I forecast the impact of the allocation change?

I would start with looking at number of tags and assume 10% less for a NR.

Not a popular opinion but they should have left winter kill units at 35%. They herds need more time to recover from last year.

Yeah.

If in 2023 there were 100 total tags available, there would have been 35 NR tags. If 30 NR applicants were drawn, there would be leftovers.

If in 2024 there are 100 total tags available, there would only be 25 NR tags. If there's still 30 NR applicants, five of them are gonna be disappointed.

My unit is ~70% non-resident which I assume is due to the low volume of resident applications. So thinking I should be okay...

I didn't get a credit card charge for Arizona elk so that's off the list. The New Mexico draw odds have really gone to hell. I don't think even the worst archery unit is over 10%.

I'm won't draw WY unless I get really lucky.
I'm in time out in Utah and Nevada.

I could burn my points in Colorado which would be the smart thing to do since they dropped the number of NR tags.

Or…put in for Montana this year (50% chance?) and fight it out with the bears.
Would probably have to go solo.

If not it's leftover or OTC Colorado.

Also I think Idaho is going to be a draw hunt starting 2025 for all NR hunters. Which would be an improvement over what they do now.

Guys, I need help. I have an addiction. I took inventory of game cameras today.

24 currently out in 3 units; 21 to still put out once the snow melts; 4 are MIA from last spring. Either hunters got them or animals knocked them off and are gone.

All are non-cellular so I can scout the terrain each trip out and also keep me out of the fat kids club.

I have enough hobbies and stuff I need to do instead of this nonsense.

If I lived where you do that's all I'd do. I'm jealous. The cameras I have out show the same axis, whitetail, or hogs. I don't even check them anymore.

No kidding, I had it coming. I will be in Koh Samui for 3 weeks in May when I need to put some out, but it will have to wait till we get back. If it is like the last 3 years, it will be late June till I can get up high enough in 12 for the rest.

Colorado has posted the potential plans for the next 5 year season structure. 2025-29. Nothing is final, but "Staff" recommendations are usually what happens.

OTC archery going away
Hoyt Ag
7:19a, 3/12/24
Number 5 should have happened long ago.

OTC archery changes, I am kinda meh on. CO is doing its best to get rid of hunting and discourage new hunters. If they want to stop the overcrowding, then get rid of OTC rifle and limit those numbers in addition to archery. Archery is not the only issue, it is clear as day to see when you see the crowds first hand between the seasons.

Additionally, CPW does no favors to itself on the bloated herd numbers.
