My wife and I are going to be in the market this year for a new vehicle for her. She currently drives a 2016 Toyota Corolla that runs like a top but is much too small for our 2 young (and quickly growing) boys. I am hearing rumblings about new & used car prices "correcting" themselves back to pre-covid levels. I am fairly doubtful this actually happens but am interested in F46's take on the auto market both at this time & in the future.

We are looking at certified pre-owned or new Ford Expeditions & Chevrolet Tahoe's. Open to other model suggestions here as well. Looking for a full size SUV with a max budget of 60K. We will keep the car until it is paid off & then some.

Is it still possible to get a new or certified full size 3 row suv for $60k or less?

I wouldn't expect new car prices to come down. Inflation is very real. I know since COVID, dining out or going to the grocery store is now 50% more than it used to be.

I didn't think it was going to be either but was pleasantly surprised when I started looking earlier today:

Minivan is a non-starter for the wife.....

What would make you go to the Sequoia over an Expedition or Tahoe? The Ford & Chevy have much nicer interiors & are around the same price. I really like the 3.5 that ford offers. Not crazy about the 6.0 Chevy from a fuel economy perspective but that's not a deal breaker for me.

I would have no hesitation on one of the 24 Sequoias if they weren't 80K but do not like the older body style or interior at all.

Sequoia will last much longer w/ less repair cost.

You can be like my father in law, and every purchase decision you ever make is based of the consumer report 10 year resale value, or some other dinosaur metric old people use. Therefore he has driven nothing but Lexus/Toyota for the last 30 years and is on his 3rd Sequoia now. He bought a CPO one right when the new ones were coming out because in his mind the prior model was a proven commodity and the new ones had question marks. But the old ones are ugly as sin, and the interior is laughable compared to the other brands. Maybe it's just a bad taste in my mouth from him, and my wife feels the same way, that we buy non-Toyota vehicles almost out of spite at this point.

They all make fine vehicles that will last you a long time. I have a Yukon and wife has a Tahoe. Both are good vehicles. I prefer the GM styling to the Expedition/Navigator, but that's just personal preference. If you like the Expeditions, pull the trigger. Or make the most minivan non-minivan decision and get the Sequoia. .

Now the 24 sequoias are pretty sweet, especially with a little lift/level and some bigger tires, but yeah, they are stupid expensive when I was in the market.

I like my Yukon AT4, been about 6 months with it after never driving anything but trucks, and so far haven't looked back on not having a truck.

Do you like the Nissan Armadas? You can get an almost brand new one (Certified with less than 5k on it), for well under your budget.

I know that saying this makes me as much of a dinosaur as either of those, but that close up of the gauge cluster reminded me how much more I prefer real analog gauges vs. screens.

Post the Corrola for sale here! I'll be buying a small sedan for my 15 yo son at around the years' end, but could go ahead with a purchase for the right car. It would happen to be a manual, would it?

I love the look of the 4Runner, and was really close to getting one before I got my Yukon, but having gone from HD trucks, and 3 kids, it was just too dang small. Front seat alone felt so cramped. Tech was pretty much expected from a Toyota, but I just like the rugged look. The new release for 25 looks good too.

Not a manual and has some bumps and bruises but is flawless mechanically as far as we know. 2016 with around 150k miles.

Most of those miles are from San Marcos to college station and Dallas to Houston back when we first started dating in 2016. We will be ready to buy new around the end of the year. Not in a hurry

I've had both a 3.5L eco boost and currently have a 6.2L Silverado. There's little difference in the fuel economy between the two engines. The 3.5L is rated for regular fuel, but in my experience was more efficient on premium. The 6.2L is recommended to use premium and I've never run anything but that. The 5.3L is a gutless, but it is slightly more efficient and runs regular gas. Both GM engines are known for lifter problems and the eco boost can phaser problems. If you plan to own out of warranty, I'd go with the Toyota. FWIW, it's not the size you're looking for, but my wife mobile is a 2022 Toyota Highlander Platinum Hybrid and we really like it. Comfortable for our family of five, 31 mpg average, and Toyota reliability gives peace of mind.

Yes and then run the cost difference on the fuel at the pump.

V8 sequoia. The low tech interior is a toyota feature, not a bug. Ford and Chevy offer nicer creature comforts and shortchange you on drivetrain reliability. That's a calculated tradeoff.

Meh, not so much, for me at least. My grandfather was a WWII vet, who refused to buy foreign cars, and our family has basically all followed suit. I've never driven anything but Ford or GM vehicles, so not having a Toyota isn't weird to me, and rarely my first choice when looking at vehicles. With the annoyance of my in-laws, it's more just fun to goad him a little anytime we get a new vehicle and it's anything but a Toyota product.

Now that new GX is a different story, I am very intrigued by that.

LETS DO!

First, a quick look at fuel prices near me.

REGULAR GASOLINE:

DIESEL:

It looks like a $0.40 difference, or 11.8% premium per gallon for diesel
I just checked our Yukon with the 5.3 ecotech3 motor, and it shows a lifetime mpg of 15.5.

If the Duramax SUVs get 23 mpg combined, that works out to a 48.38% increase in fuel economy at a trade off for 11% increase in fuel costs.

Everyone likes to dismiss the diesel because of the increase in fuel costs, but it appears no one has done the math.

The math is actually easier.
Diesel = Awesome.
Gas = Wish I had my diesel back
