BREAKING NEWS: A&M releases Mike Sherman from duties
By Billy Liucci
December 1, 2011
The Mike Sherman Era at Texas A&M has come to an end. The fourth-year head coach was informed of the decision by the Aggie decision-makers on Thursday evening. During his tenure as the Ags’ head man, Sherman went 25-25, including what many felt was a breakthrough Cotton Bowl season in 2010 and a bitterly disappointing 6-6 finish this fall.
Myself and the rest of the TexAgs crew will obviously have this covered from all angles throughout the remainder of the day — as well as the upcoming coaching search ... one that is expected to begin and end very swiftly. Kevin Sumlin is the leading candidate for the job, with Kirby Smart and Charlie Strong in the mix as well. Much more on this as the night rolls on at TexAgs.com.
Liucci Tweets:
1) Coach Sherman has apparently come off the road (no longer making in-house visits). Texas A&M is now in the market for a new head man.
2) Lots to say about this later on twitter and @texags but I'll begin with this: There's not a better man in coaching than Mike Sherman...
3) ...and I have to believe he'll be on an NFL sideline as early as next season - as an OC or head coach.
4) The A&M program is in so much better shape today than it was four years ago, it's not even worthy of debate. The next coach will inherit...
5) ...a very stable situation. As reported by @kbohls, UH's Kevin Sumlin the primary candidate ... with Kirby Smart and Charlie Strong in mix.
6) Based on what I've felt from outset, A&M has ONE candidate they felt was the answer and they could get QUICKLY or they don't make this move.

We go through coaches like hollywood goes through marriages.
Just imagine how good LSU could be if they had never fired Gerry Dinardo. Or Alabama, if they had never fired Mike Price or Bill Curry. Or OU if they had never fired Blake.

Quote from Sports Justice
"A&M could have made a run at Mike Leach a week ago, but now he’s off the market. Kevin Sumlin? If he ever leaves UH, he’ll have far better choices than A&M. He might want to look at the last decade and see that A&M has gone through three different head coaches"

liked him personally, a lot!
didnt get the job done. had his shot. good luck Sherm!
wasting another year was never going to be the answer.
we have excelled in all other sports EXCEPT football. we HAVE to get it right at some point.
now is the time to do that!
my faith in this administration has been restored beyond words!!!!!!!

Thanks Coach, we are a much better team than what you inherited.
Thanks for leaving us in better shape than you found us.
Wish you well and God Bless.

Hopefully the new coach doesn't continues the trend of being worse than the guy before him.
Jackie > RC > Fran > Sherm > New Guy
Jackie > RC > Fran > Sherm > New Guy

should've pulled RT for Showers to start the third quarter; could've been a job saving move (not to mention a GAME saving move).
Best of luck to 'Sherm. He just wasn't the right coach for A&M (and certainly not the SEC style of football).

Whoever the new coach we already have him booked. This is the way it works in D-1. The brass is not going to let a guy go without having their guy picked and know if he will take it.
