BREAKING NEWS: A&M releases Mike Sherman from duties

By Billy Liucci
December 1, 2011

The Mike Sherman Era at Texas A&M has come to an end. The fourth-year head coach was informed of the decision by the Aggie decision-makers on Thursday evening. During his tenure as the Ags’ head man, Sherman went 25-25, including what many felt was a breakthrough Cotton Bowl season in 2010 and a bitterly disappointing 6-6 finish this fall.

Myself and the rest of the TexAgs crew will obviously have this covered from all angles throughout the remainder of the day — as well as the upcoming coaching search ... one that is expected to begin and end very swiftly. Kevin Sumlin is the leading candidate for the job, with Kirby Smart and Charlie Strong in the mix as well. Much more on this as the night rolls on at TexAgs.com.

Liucci Tweets:
1) Coach Sherman has apparently come off the road (no longer making in-house visits). Texas A&M is now in the market for a new head man.

2) Lots to say about this later on twitter and @texags but I'll begin with this: There's not a better man in coaching than Mike Sherman...

3) ...and I have to believe he'll be on an NFL sideline as early as next season - as an OC or head coach.

4) The A&M program is in so much better shape today than it was four years ago, it's not even worthy of debate. The next coach will inherit...

5) ...a very stable situation. As reported by @kbohls, UH's Kevin Sumlin the primary candidate ... with Kirby Smart and Charlie Strong in mix.

6) Based on what I've felt from outset, A&M has ONE candidate they felt was the answer and they could get QUICKLY or they don't make this move.

Sherman thank you for everything. Wished it would have worked out better. Best of luck.

I am embarrassed by all the "Aggies" who are acting with little class.

Kirby's the Smart choice.

Although the Nick Saban tree hasn't panned out that well.

Dooley-crap at UT
Will-Terrible year at UF, should never have been 6-6
Jimbo-Done some great recruiting, on field results have not panned out
Mark Dantonio is probably the most successful.

Coach, it didn't work out but that doesn't mean we weren't proud to call you one of us in many ways. Still are glad that you came down here and became a Texas Aggie.

Sherman, thank you for always maintaining class and integrity within the program. We wish you the best.
You are truly a man of great character.

Defense wins in the SEC. That U of H coach is an offense minded HC. Haven't we learned anything this year? It is that you could have a brilliant offense, but if you have a sucky defense you are just dead meat. That is even more true in the SEC. Look at 'Bama. Their offense is not so great. They are pretty plain Jane offensively. What they have and the reason they are so great is their D. Please A&M brass: grab a coach with a great defensive mind heading into the SEC. Grab a young guy who has the energy that Sherman lacked. I'd say Kirby Smart would be great selection. Kirby, Kirby, Kirby, Kirby!!!!!!

Mixed emotions. Sad to lose a coach who is such an upstanding man, who truly cared for his team and wanted them to have their priorities straight to be successful in life....BUT coaches are paid to win. Sad to see Coach Sherman go.

Best of luck to Sherman, he seems like a really good guy.

I really want to win though. I hope they get it right this time.

It's always sad to see such a nice man get taken out of a position, but it is what it is and ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

I like Sherman overall and wish him well, but the change needed to be made. He was not getting done what needed to get done.

I believe things happen for a reason and in most of this type of situations I've had to deal with the ousted ends up in a better place down the road - if they don't give up on themselves.

Best of luck to Sherman - he's too good a man to sit on the sidelines for long.

Good luck Coach Sherman. All of us Aggies respect your classy style. Paying your own way to Afghanistan to meet with our troops showed me a lot. My nephew was in the war zone at the time and he said your visit really boosted the morale of our guys and gals who are laying it all on the line.

As opposed to the last four years?

Look, it had to be done. I don't hate him like I did Fran and hope that the next place he coaches will be more of a success, but he was never the right man for the job.

Stupidity at its best.

Let's rush out and get the guy that's never been a head coach. I'm sure he'll jump right into the SEC and whip everyone!

lol

Fan base deserves what they get. Pathetic.

BTW, Byrne's track record is not hiring coordinators. Not sure if he'll have any say or not. I'm sure a few BMAs are combing through Texags right now looking for good coaches to hire.

...sadly, I'm fecking serious.

Jackie > RC > Fran > Sherm > New Guy

I was getting all pumped up and ready to whoop until I saw this post. Now I'm depressed. Thanks a lot.

OTOH, Bowtie broke a lot of trends by pushing for the SEC.

Had to be done. Good luck in the NFL coach. It took t.u. a few hires to get the one that worked out, sooners too. And those were programs that had been to the mountaintop. We're still trying to get there. This coaching change stuff isn't easy, but we'll get it right some day---sure hope it's this time.

Couldn't agree more. Although I dont think it's just the AD. Sherman is a class act and did our program right. I think he deserves better than this. Can't believe some "Aggies" are acting like this
