How does promotion work in league 2? Top few teams go up? Or is it like their prior league where the top team dies and it is a playoff for the others?

Just a little bit past the halfway point and our heroes sit in 2nd, 2 points behind Stockport. Good opportunity tomorrow as Stockport is away against Notts County while Wrexham travels to faces 17th place Newport County

FA Cup against Blackburn today on ESPN+ at 1:30.

Saw tweets last week that they're anticipating there will be more traveling Wrexham fans in attendance than home Blackburn fans. Ought to be rowdy.

And game in hand. Two games in hand against Crewe.

I'm gonna splurge on a subscription for the month of April. Sooner if they happen to get to a point where they can clinch promotion.

Bored on this international break so I got a single game pass to watch on iFollow. You subscribe from the club itself so you get a video feed that uses the club's commentators for audio. Feed isn't bad. Not many cameras, but it's 1080p which is more than I can say for ESPN+ Bundesliga coverage. Had some audio issues once where they got spotty and dropped but then immediately came back clear.

Kinda rough game to watch due to strong winds. Lots of mistakes, but Wrexham are having a great first half - up 0-3 on the road.

Gave up a cheap goal in the second half, but the game was never a doubt. Comfortable despite the stats that might suggest otherwise.

Up to 2nd place in the table but contest is still wide open. 7 games left for most teams and 9 points separate #1 from #6.

Nm (and wrong icon)… I was hoping for a draw but Stockport is winning big. They also have a game in hand.

But on the plus side, Wrexham's lead over Dons is a bit more comfortable, especially since they've played an extra game.

Great result today beating Mansfield Town 2-0. 6 matches to go

So max Dons can do is 85 right? Wrexham need 12 points (with GD advantage). 4 wins out of six, or 3 wins and 3 draws secures advancement as of today.

Last 6 games are against the (15,22,9,24,6,1) positions in the table.

Their record in those 6 reverse fixtures was 4W, 1D, 1L.

That's really misleading for reasons I'd be happy to get into when I've had fewer beers and more sleep. They're doing just fine (but they probably appreciate the drama).

I enjoyed this take from the Guardian regarding the celebrity ownership.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/mar/05/us-efl-wrexhams-rob-mcelhenney-ryan-reynolds-tv

Quote:

. . .
There's no dispute that Wrexham's celebrity ownership is the main driver behind the club's rise to global popularity, but in many ways that model of control goes against the trend across European football, where professional clubs are becoming less the plaything of rich individuals than giant investment funds.

Compared to many of the high-profile clubs in the Premier League, which are juiced to maximize short-term gains and run according to the dictates of vast investment portfolios, there's something almost charmingly nostalgic about the spectacle of two wealthy North American dilettantes playing owner at the football club of a small former mining town and throwing themselves into the life of the local community.

The themes and narratives at the heart of the documentary the life and quirks of the town, the club's against-the-odds quest for promotion up the ranks of the EFL, the off-field characters and on-field strivers make Welcome to Wrexham a very different viewing experience from, say, Amazon's All or Nothing series, or Apple TV+'s shudderingly dull recent series about Leo Messi's arrival in Miami.
. . .
The story of lower league clubs, as Harvey paints it, is as much about changing demographics and urban revitalization away from the UK's core population centers as it is about football and that's a narrative that will retain its potency for any club, not just Wrexham.

In many ways the idealized future he paints is one in which the EFL gains mind share among the American public as a kind of antidote to the big-spending excesses of top-flight soccer across Europe, as the reverse side of the coin that's turned football at the elite level into a game of runaway salary inflation, private equity myopia, and serial financial fair play breaches. But critically some might say paradoxically the EFL can only build that identity for itself now that the likes of MLS and the Premier League have established such a strong beachhead for soccer in America.

"It makes no sense for the EFL to go head to head in program slots with the Premier League," Harvey says. "We've got to try and work with broadcasters who are showing Premier League games and look to market EFL games on the back of that key hook that's bringing fans to the station in the first place."

Whether that means Wrexham would support the EFL striking a new rights deal with current US Premier League rights holder NBC, Harvey declines to say. But as English lower league football starts to think seriously about expanding its presence overseas, clubs will have to pull all the same marketing levers familiar to teams in the European elite the merchandising, social media campaigns, documentaries and inside accounts while emphasizing that they represent a version of the sport that's fundamentally very different to what viewers would know from subsisting on a diet of Man City v Newcastle and Champions League knockouts alone.
Edit: Also sweet win yesterday.

Followed by the 1-0 win over Colchester, and 4-1 win over Crawley Town today.

3 matches left, including one against last place Forest Green.

A win and a draw in the last 3 all but guarantees promotion, as the best MK Dons can do is 83 points if they win out, and Wrexham has an 11 goal lead in GD (assuming today's result has already been included in the GD - if not it's even more).

MK Dons next is against 3rd place Mansfield Town.

It would be over and promotion secured if Wrexham wins Saturday and Mansfield beats MK. Even a tie between Mansfield and MK basically does it due to GD.

League 2 promotion situation for Wrexham.

After a thumping victory at home to Crawley Town on Tuesday night (with star striker Paul Mullin scoring twice in a 4-1 win), Wrexham are second on 79 points from 43 games, Mansfield Town lie third with 76 points from 42 games and MK Dons are third with 74 points from 43 games.

That means MK Dons can end the campaign with a maximum tally of 83 points and Mansfield can reach 88 if both were to win all their remaining matches but because they play each other on Saturday 13 April, at least one will drop points.

WREXHAM'S REMAINING LEAGUE TWO MATCHES

13 April - Forest Green (H)

20 April - Crewe Alexandra (A)

27 April - Stockport County (H)

As Parkinson's side only need to be in the top three for promotion, the Dons's potential tally of 83 points is the relevant one, meaning 84 points is the magic number for Wrexham to guarantee finishing above at least one of them and sealing a top-three place.

That means Wrexham need five points from their final three matches, so two wins (or one win and two draws) will secure promotion for the Red Dragons and get them back into League One after two decades away. Wrexham would be promoted on Saturday if they beat Forest Green Rovers, and MK Dons and Barrow fail to win against Mansfield and Gillingham respectively.

Make it 2-0 Wrexham now. Fun game.

And now 3-0. And Mansfield scored against MK so they're 1-1.

4-0 before halftime. Forest rolling over and Wrexham aren't stopping.
