Interesting podcast on new CBA. Lots of movement expected because teams won't be able to afford to hold on to their middle tier players if they have 2 max players already. His examples were Jordan Poole, Grant Williams, Bobby Brown, Gabe Vincent. Their teams won't afford them going forward. And Suns ares screwed and must trade Ayton.

Yep, that's why I have been predicting that a lot of teams are going to blow things up and make major changes.

It also makes it really bad to have more than one max player. I think Houston, San Antonio, OKC, Orlando, and Detroit are going to be able to make some major moves this summer.

Ok, quick refresher on the penalties (because I needed it)

Salary Floor: 90% of the salary cap ~121mm
Salary Cap is $134mm
Luxury Tax is $162mm (set at 53% of basketball related income divided by 30 teams)
1st Apron is LuxTax+7mm (169mm)
2nd Apron is LuxTax+17.5mm (179.5mm)

Starting in 24-25, if you aren't above the salary floor on opening day, you won't get a tax dispersal. This year, that was in the 15-17mm range back to the teams. Thanks, Clippers!

  • If you use the Bi-Annual Exception (4.5mm), you are hard capped at the apron and cannot go over. Teams over the first apron cannot use the BAE.
  • If you use the full MLE (about 11mm), you cannot go over the Luxury tax line.
  • If you use the tax-payer MLE (about 6.5mm), you cannot go over the 1st apron.
  • If you use the Apron MLE (about 5mm), you cannot go over the 2nd apron.
  • If you are over the 2nd Apron, you get no MLE.
  • If you are over the 2nd Apron, you cannot take back more money than you send out in a trade. Previously, you could take back 125% of the salary you are sending out.
  • If you are over the 2nd Apron, your 1st round pick in 7 years is frozen. If you go over the 2nd Apron one more time in the next 3 seasons, your pick is moved to last, no matter where you are. So if the Clippers can't dump Kawhi's gimpy ass and they pay the 2nd apron, their 2030 pick is frozen. If they go over the apron again in 2025, that 2030 pick is 30th, even if they win the lottery.
  • If you are over the 2nd Apron, you cannot sign a buyout player. So the Jazz bought out Westbrook this year and he signed with the Clippers and was their star in some of the playoffs. Not possible next year.
  • If you are over the 2nd apron, you can't send cash in a trade. The Celtics sent the Spurs cash and a 2nd to take Noah Vonleh to clear luxury tax room. Not possible anymore.
  • Cannot trade 1st round picks more than 6 years in the future. And remember you can't trade 1st round picks that are consecutive years. That would keep the Durant/Harden/Kyrie and other recent big trades from happening.

If you are over the 2nd apron, you can only acquire players by:
  • Veteran Minimum contract
  • Trades where you take back less than you send out.
  • Signing draft picks.

Teams in trouble with the Lux Tax Apron:

Golden State:
$177mm in salaries if they let all free agents walk. Only 10 players under contract
Plus add in their 1st round pick, they are over the Lux Tax Apron 2.
Free Agents:
Draymond Green
Donte DiVicenco
Iggy
Anthony Lamb

LA Clippers:
$91mm to Kawhi and George.
$177.2MM for 10 players, IF they waive the unguaranteed contracts of Eric Gordon, Brandon Boston, and Jason Preston.
Their 1st round pick hold puts them over the Apron.
Plus they have free agents like Westbrook and Plumlee that are important parts of the team. They have no rights for Westbrook.

LA Lakers:
$87.5 for Bron+AD.
Beasley, Shaq Harrison, and Bamba are unguaranteed.
Vanderbilt and Max Christie are the only other guaranteed players.

Free agents:
DAngelo Russell
Austin Reaves
Rui
Lonnie Walker
Dennis Schroeder
And others.

The extra $80mm will go quick.

Milwaukee:
Middleton can opt out of his 40mm deal
Jevon Carter, can too (2.3mm)
$80.6 for Giannis and Jrue.
$113mm in salary if Khris and Jevon opt out.

Free agents:
Brook Lopez
Khris Middleton
Jevon Carter
Joe Ingles
Jae Crowder
Goran Dragic
Jeff Teague
Myers Leonard
Wes Matthews

So, if the league did expand, would they most likely go with 8 4-team divisions (NFL), two 8-team disions within each conference (like NHL), or something else?

Fingers Crossed for Seattle. Climate Pledge is updated and ready. Would be nice not having to drive to Portland to see Wemby play.

Yeah, don't want Wemby playing on a court with a hockey rink underneath. Yes I know there are other setups like that but the less the better

There is a lot of talk about NOLA trying to trade Zion Williamson for Scoot Henderson.

Apparently there were games played and other clauses in his contract that made part of it unguaranteed.

Zion played 29 games this year and his weight+BF% has to stay under 295.

https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/271920/Zion-Williamsons-Contract-Extension-Not-Fully-Guaranteed

If Zion had made an All-NBA team, it would have been guaranteed.

Jordan paid $180mm for the Hornets in 2010. Supposedly worth $1.7B now.
