Shohei Ohtani’s agent just announced that he has signed a 10-year, $700 million deal with the LA Dodgers.

That’s almost $300 million more than the previous MLB record.
That’s insane 🤯 pic.twitter.com/A4TQtEOxbB

7 million is way below market value.
Eta Japanese yen to dollars is minus 2 zeros, from my time there.

He will make more than Oakland and Baltimore's entire roster, and a few mil less than Tampa and Pittsburgh.

And he will see less than half once he is fleeced by the IRS and Cal state income tax.

Dude is a beast, but I'm glad the Astros didn't do that. Not that they were in the running, but there just no way that deal isn't an absolute disaster by years 6,7,8,9…

Maybe by year 2 if he never pitches again. I'm not saying he won't pitch again but he is on TJ #2.
ETA: as a Ranger fan, I'm glad he is out of the AL West. I've seen too many bombs from him against us.

Reports are that a good portion of his salary will be deferred. He'll be the new Bobby Bonilla. Getting paid for the next 50 years!

About $850,000 per home game where the Dodgers collect the gate.
At an average ticket price of $100, the first 8,500 people through the gate are there just to pay Ohtani.

Fun fact from a quick google:
"If you take your deferred compensation payments over a period of 10 years or more, those payments will be taxed in the state where you reside,"
So he will be buying a big house in Florida with all the other retirees

Why. Personally I loved the incredibly frequent headlines about how Ohtani and Trout did something amazing as the Angels lost yet another game.

We both got from 13 games with Ohtani to only 3

Yeah as much as buying out Jimbo sucks, at least we only have to do it once. If Ohtani falls off a cliff physically, the Dodgers will only be a few million short of having to make that payment every year.
There. That makes me feel better as an Aggie.

Isn't California working to pass a law trying to collect tax after you leave or was that NY?

Just told Jon Rahm to hold my beer.
Seriously, glad they did this. I hate the Dodgers. While he is a spectacular player, one major injury (and he is a massive risk playing 2-ways) and they are cooked payroll wise for years.

If he is done pitching (and I doubt it) I bet they try him in the outfield. He's more than athletic enough to be a corner outfielder.
5:13p, 12/9/23
X sports writers suggesting Ohtani's CBT load will be around $50 MM per year for the first few years of the deal. Still a a tremendous amount.
8:37p, 12/9/23
He's worth it. I don't think many here understand he is a walking mint at this point. He is Taylor Swift, Michael Jordan, and Floyd Mayweather in one.
Financials: Dodgers will net profit. Zero doubt.
Baseball: Second TMJ may make him a one way player in the end. Super interested to see where this shakes out for him on the field and how much Dodgers will go to protect him.

Why not ask for $1 billion?
Seriously - he is making more than the payrolls of 8 other MLB teams.
MLB is a joke. There is nothing this guy does that is worth it.
