We will be in Gulfport at the end of June for baseball. Any recommendations where to stay there or in Biloxi? Hoping to stay somewhere with beach access or close to it.

I would stay down in Biloxi instead of Gulfport if you want beach access. I haven't stayed there but have attended meetings at the South Beach hotel and it is a decent place in easy walking distance to a couple of restaurants and right on the boardwalk along the beach. There are a couple of casino hotels a little east of there that are also right on the beach (Hard Rock and Beau Rivage), that I assume are nice, but I have never set foot in them. I stayed at the Doubletree in Biloxi once and I wouldn't pay their rates to stay there again. If you don't have to have beach access and want to be closer to Gulfport, there is a Hilton Garden Inn and a Residence Inn right across the road from the airport that are both decent. I have stayed at both, and the Hilton is a little nicer, but both are clean and reasonably priced.

The White House Hotel has a really neat history. I grew up down there, and it was essentially abandoned my whole childhood (late 70s and beyond), it flooded during Katrina, and finally was rebuilt and restored after that. Truly a labor of love.

I finally got to stay there Thanksgiving before last. Not a luxury property, but definitely a charmer with a nostalgia factor. And it's right on Hwy 90 at the beach.

Ocean springs is great, but if they have a baseball tournament in Gulfport, that is 30+ minutes each way to drive down there. Biloxi is a ways away too, but probably more like 15-20 mins drive.

Coming from inside the loop of Houston and dealing with that traffic the time, the heaviest traffic in The Biloxi area seems like its not bad. But i know what you are saying.

We are spending 4th of July week in Biloxi/ocean springs. Fishing the Chandeluer Islands and enjoying the area. Might even spend dome time in a casino.

How are the beaches in this area? Anywhere similar to Gulf Shores? Biloxi is a much more palatable drive than all the way to Alabama.

I was out working at Keesler last September when Cruising the Coast came through. Beach Blvd looked like the Katy Freeway during rush hour down towards Gulfport when I was trying to get back to my hotel one day.

Beaches are fine, as they are man-made and the sand is very white. Water is the problem. You aren't on the Gulf of Mexico. Because of the barrier islands, you are on the Mississippi Sound. The water is brown and usually not clear, and it's not as salty. Not many waves to speak of, either. It looks dirty (it's not any more polluted than anywhere else), so that kind of ruins the aesthetic. It's worth it to keep driving to Gulf Shores, IMO.

Agree with that opinion. Think clean white sand beach with Galveston Bay water and no waves. The beach is very nice, the water is not.

I am on my way back from a trip there right now and stayed at a different hotel this time. The Hampton Inn on Beach Blvd in Biloxi was very clean and looked very recently renovated. Probably the nicest non-luxury hotel I have seen in that area. I am not sure what their normal room rates are since I was using the Govt rate, but it is a good option with the beach right across the street.
