What is the consensus? We plan to carry on, but having second thoughts b/c of CDG.

I don't really understand your question? How does flying to CDG impact a decision to carry on or check a bag? Always carry on if you can. Avoid checking bags if at all possible. If it's not possible to avoid checking a bag, then check a bag and don't worry about it.

Not enough information given to solve the problem.
  • Is Paris your final destination?
  • Are you traveling alone?
  • Are you going for work or pleasure?
  • How long is the duration of your trip?
  • Are you under any time constraints on Departure or Arrival?
  • Do you plan to bring anything back - souvenirs? Auto parts for the Citroen you're restoring?

Are you worried about airport strikes?

I avoid checking bags on Air France and at CDG with an absolute passion. There are just way too many unannounced strikes - especially by the baggage handlers - to take a chance. One time we couldn't even land at CDG because the baggage handlers were on strike and lying in the runway...fun times.

I don't see why you would even consider checking if you are able to carry on. Wife and I just did 10 days in Europe with carry on and I won't ever check bags again.
