The crazy thing is that this late in the time frame he's still just 40 to 1 to win the Masters. People can't get enough

Finally a reason to watch the Masters. I was going to boycott it like any true fan would if Tiger wasn't playing, but now I'm all in

I'm going to be so pissed if his whole round isn't on TV both Thursday and Friday.

And if he misses the cut they better let him play the weekend anyway.

There's nothing better than watching a great champion with the yips struggling to break 80.

Bump.

85.

Never felt farther away for Tiger than it does right now. Beginning to think 2013 was the last great, multiple win, year.

I really just can't figure out what is up with his driving. How can the mental game be so messed up? Maybe he should just play a club like Phil has employed before (can't remember name..). A 3W denser head on a longer shaft.

Or maybe a driver head on a shorter shaft. His ego is getting the best of him.

Should've never left Haney.

I'm going to reserve judgment until he has more tournaments under his belt.

Tiger was never a great driver of the ball. He just needs to be a little better than average.

I think this is a bit of a misconception because he has been driving so erratic for so long now.
The truth is, in the earlier part of his career, he was a great driver of the golf ball. If you don't believe me, go check out his stats.

For instance in his first 4 full years on tour 97'-00', he finished 10th, 16th, 4th. and 1st in total driving & 3 out of the 4 years he averaged better than 70% of fairways hit. 2003 seemed to be the point where his driving stats started to take a nose dive.

Yeah, he was absolutely a great driver for a long stretch early in his career. That's where Tiger-proofing came from. He was bombing it to places that other players were not and taking the designed teeth out of some holes (for instance, being able to bomb it over the fairway bunker on 18 at Augusta)

He has won a lot of tournaments since 2003. My point is that he doesn't need to be a great driver to be dominant.

Personally, Tiger's problem is it's either feast or famine with him. He can dial down his driver and put it in the fairway at 290 yards. But he wants to bomb it 320 yards each and every time, accuracy be damned.

Then again, if anybody can take a new swing and produce wins, it's Tiger. So only time will tell.

I'll agree that Tiger can win without driving the ball great, but I disagree that he can be DOMINANT, without driving the ball great. Especially with all the great players we have now.

Again, I'll support my claim with facts.

Eight of his major wins came in the six year span of 1997-2002. Six major wins have come in the 13 years since 2002. Again, if we are talking "dominant", his three largest victory margins in majors (12, 15, and 8 strokes) occurred in 1997 and 2000.

I think for Tiger to be "dominant" against the Rory McIlroy's of the world today, he has to have all phases of his game going well, if not perfect.

I think about 2000 is the year he went to graphite shaft in the driver. Even with the Nike contract, he held on the the steel shafted Titleist 975D until Nike built him a driver.

And his swing transition at the top got quicker and quicker.

Randomly came across this article (it's from Nov '14) and found this excerpt intersting:

quote:
Jason Sobel noted on Morning Drive that Tiger's biggest weakness right now is accuracy off the tee, yet the three PGA players Como has worked with all finished outside the top-135 in driving accuracy.

Now it doesn't say how "good" these guys were at driving before working with Como, but you get the point...

With each of the last 2, Tiger seems to have gone way overboard with overanalysis of the science of the swing vs the natural art and feel.

Agreed. Here is another excerpt from the article that I completely agree with

quote:
"I wish Tiger would have resisted the temptation. He's maybe the most naturally gifted player ever; he doesn't need a coach -- especially one who's into biomechanics and neuroscience -- he needs to find it on his own. Success will be to win a couple of Tour events and contend at one or two majors. Anything beyond that is a home run."

Came over the top and topped his 3 wood on #18, never got it 3 ft above the ground, hopped over one bunker, and ran into the bunker that the Ex Dir of the USGA said nobody would ever hit into. As ugly as I have ever seen him play.

It's as if he's actually getting worse.

Can anyone name a pro golfer who is worse off the tee than Tiger Woods? Seems insane but I seriously think he is the worst driver on the PGA Tour right now.

I don't think it's even close, actually. His driving accuracy, if he had played enough rounds, would rank 201st on Tour. PGATOUR.com only ranks 202 players. He beats two of them. The two players worse than him, Baddely and Weir, are both shorter off the tee than Tiger but Tiger's misses are wilder.*

In total strokes gained, Weir is the only pro worse than Woods this year.

*In the "distance from the edge of the fairway" stat to measure accuracy off the tee, Woods would be dead last if he qualified.
