Glendronach 12 is a bit above 50. But I think it fits the flavor you are looking for.

New Ardbeg drops this month, Fermutation. Following is from Ardbeg in an email I received:

The longest fermentation in Ardbeg's history transformed the liquid into a truly sensational specimen the SHARPEST, ZINGIEST and WILDEST Ardbeg ever.

First fill and refill Bourbon barrels employed to temper sourness ensure a sweetness. Zesty vibrant hints of smoked orange, menthol and peppermint invade the nose, while on the tongue a sharp zingy texture leads to ominous flavours of malty biscuit, powerful aniseed, cardamom and sweet mint toffee.
Only Committee Members can be trusted to handle this wildest of Ardbegs, but it won't be long before they disappear!

This wildest of Ardbegs is available from whisky specialists in the USA now*, but it won't be long before they disappear…

Obviously a bit late on this, but the Glenmorangie Lasanta is ~$45. Really nice raisin-like taste. I'd consider it a bang for your buck sherry bomb any day. Their port-barrel finished Quinta Ruban is good too.

It took me a few tries when I first started drinking whiskey ~7 years ago, but I freaking love peated Scotch. I've tried a decent selection that range from light peat (Highland Park) to heavy peat (Lagavulin 16 and Laphroaig quarter cask).

Anyways, Oban 14 is a very well-balanced scotch. If anyone is interested in trying a medium peated scotch, try Oban 14

Had Lag 16 last night with dinner. It is so good. Really have to get a bottle.

Yep. It had been over a year since I'd had it and was a little worried I may have built it up more based on memory and my first discovery of it. It far surpassed even what my fond memories of it were! As soon as my Total Wine gets a bottle in, I will be heading that way to grab one.

Well, I keep trying to find a scotch and still on the cheap Costco stuff.

A neighbor had the Ron Swanson whiskey of the year, and I gave it a go. The initial whiskey part was actually amazing. There were all kinds of solid flavors, and then the smoke and peat hit. It did get better as I got to the bottom of the glass, but I ended up burping smoke flavor for an hour or so.

Same neighbor had Mcallan 12, and it was better, but there was some odd flavor in there that made me think it was not worth the price.

Both of them drank really well and until I got to the off flavors they were pretty dang good. Y'all have not run me off completely, and I'll keep trying.

I am happy to hear you are still exploring! Scotch is one of those spirits that I truly believe anyone who enjoys whisk(e)y can find a distillery they love.

Really good intros to Scotch (a Speyside, a Highlands and a Lowlands)- They won't have the Macallan funk or the smoky/peaty flavors of Islay or other more adventurous malts.

Balvenie Doublewood 12 (Usually runs between 55-70 dollars a bottle depending on where you are)
Glenmorangie Original (amazing scotch especially considering the price point ~$35 for a 750 ml)
Glenkinchie 12 very light flavors and very easy drinking. (a bit more expensive at ~$70 but is well worth finding a place that serves it to give it a try)

ETA: There is nothing wrong with drinking the Costco scotch either. If you like it, I say go for it.

This is my motto and I say it every time someone asks me if I consider "insert whatever they like to drink here" is any good. Drink what you like, no matter what others think, the more whisky drinkers there are the better for the industry as a whole which hopefully leads to new and exciting innovations.

Also, don't be afraid to branch out of your whisk(e)y comfort zone, you might just be surprised at what you find (The Penderyn Icons of Wales Rhiannon was my latest out comfort zone purchase and I think it is amazing).

Just saw on concierge that Teelings has a peated Irish out called Blackpitts. With the triple distilling they say it brings the smoke down to a trace/mild level. Very interested in this one.

Just picked me up a bottle of Aberlour A'Bunadh, Batch #70. I haven't tried this one out in several years and I think this one is considerably better than previous batches. Sherry lover's dream here.

I recently picked up this batch, too. I haven't had one since 63 but I loved it and am excited to open it up and try it.

I also had a buddy give me his bottle of Macallan 10 Cask Strength. He doesn't like it but I think it's great. The 10 yr age statement been discontinued for a while

You have a nice buddy. I'm very fond of the double Cask Macallan, especially the 15 year.

I picked up a bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail on a recommendation from a neighbor. Very good stuff, and reasonably priced as well.

New guy update, tried the Glenlivet Cognac Cask 14 year.

Did not suck, and was pleasant. It was after a 123 proof bourbon, so I will need to try it again. It was much more of the "Irish, but better" that I seem to enjoy. I'll mooch another pour off my neighbor to confirm, but would almost consider buying a bottle based off the sample Friday night.

My local Specs, Goody Goody, Total Wine and the mom and pop are all out of Lagavulin 16. Has anyone seen it recently?

Same here, no 16 on the shelf that I am seeing. I did get a bottle of Macallan Harmony Collection Rich Cacao at TW while out for lunch today, and was specifically looking at Islay whisky to know they had no 16 Lag. Trying find Ardbeg Traigh Bhan Batch 3...

I was eyeballing the Macallan Harmony Collection Rich Cacao last night before I saw your post, but I didn't quite pull the trigger. Let me know your thoughts once you've tried it. I may go back and get it.

The two I hadn't had before the JW Black and the Macallan 12 are pretty good.
The JW is good. Good islay type flavor. Think it might serve as a good intro to peat/smoke.
The Macallan is pretty good flavor. Only the second Macallan I've had and it does not seem to have the strong malty funk I remember.

If you hadn't seen from the bourbon thread, the Twin Liquors sale is happening again. I picked up a bottle of Talisker 18 for $101.50. They had it listed at $161.00, but I have seen it online in the $130-$145 range, so still a pretty good price.

We went on vacation to a little place 45 minutes north of Puerta Vallarta in early April and they had 6 bottles of Lag 16 on the shelf at this hole in the wall grocery.... Couldn't believe it. We go there twice a year and it wasn't on the shelf last September.

So strange. Brand new mom and pop store just opened by me. I was hoping that being brand new they would get some. Nope. The total wine has gotten lag 8 a few times. But has not had any 16 in a while.

But the Laphroaig QC is pretty good. Not Lag 16 good but good.
