Texas A&M Baseball reaches No. 1 for second consecutive year

Fun times at Olsen Field.

During the Easter weekend Rob Childress' Texas A&M baseball club took two of three games from then-No. 10 LSU, boosting its record to 21-3 (4-2 SEC) and earning a leap from No. 2 to the coveted No. 1 spot in the D1Baseball weekly rankings.

D1B editors Aaron Fitt and Kendall Rogers write:

For the first time this season, there’s a change at the top of the D1Baseball Top 25 rankings. Preseason No. 1 Florida’s six-week reign at the top ended with a series loss at Kentucky, paving the way for Texas A&M to take over as No. 1.

The Aggies improved to 21-3 overall with a series win against then-No. 10 LSU (which fell five spots to No. 15). Texas A&M has opened the season with six straight winning weekends; the only other team in the Top 25 that has not had a losing weekend is No. 9 Florida State.

The Aggies also ranked No. 1 in the newest Baseball America poll and March 28 USA Today rankings.

It marks the second straight year A&M has held the honor of nation's top-ranked team.

Last season the Aggies opened on a 24-game winning streak and were 27-2 when they hit the top spot in the rankings, spending two weeks at No. 1 between three major polls.

This time around, Florida — which entered the weekend on a 16-game winning streak — dropped a series against Kentucky to cede the No. 1 spot to the Aggies. The Gators dropped to No. 2.

Their opponent this weekend? No. 1 Texas A&M.

Yes, also for the second consecutive year, the Aggies will be involved in a 1 vs. 2 regular season series showdown. In 2015 No. 2 A&M visited Baton Rouge, where No. 1 LSU took two of three games in a hotly contested series.

Four of the top five teams in the D1B rankings are from the SEC (is that good?). The Aggies and Gators are followed by No. 3 Vanderbilt and No. 5 South Carolina.

No. 11 Mississippi State, No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 15 LSU and No. 18 Arkansas round out the eight SEC teams in the top 25.

It's time to take a huge series on the road. That's what #1 teams do.

Good Job Aggies. Turn on the heat at the end of the season.
