Jason Cook on Sumlin's future, Texas AD job, SEC Network

By Gabe Bock
October 4, 2013

Key quotes from Jason Cook Interview:

"It was flattering to be listed as a candidate for the Texas AD job. It tells me the people in Austin have taken notice of us."

"There are a lot of agendas involved in choosing a new AD anywhere. 9 times out of 10 the media is being played by someone."

"When I talked to Loftin about moving to athletics, I told him that's where I felt I would have the biggest impact for A&M."

"I'm back where I want to be, in athletics, from a career standpoint. I'm learning a lot from Hyman right now."

"There is a lot of change going on in college athletics right now and it will be interesting to see how things evolve."

"I'm very committed to the amateurism model that college athletics presents. This is not professional sports."

"Over the past three years, we haven't been able to get off the national news. I wouldn't trade that position with anyone."

"In Texas, we still deal with a lot of old perceptions of who we are. In the SEC, we've told our story how we want it told."

"Anytime A&M plays on TV, we are leading our time slot and we're having significant increases in ratings from 2012."

"Against Rice, the game opened with 3.6M watching. Once Manziel came in during the second half, 1.5M more tuned in."

"The Alabama game was the highest rated CBS day-game in 23 years."

"Austin has quickly become an SEC TV market. Every other TV in Austin was watching the Alabama game."

"The SMU game was the highest rated ESPNU game of the season. Arkansas pulled in about 3M viewers as well."

"We've proved the doubters wrong. There IS significant value in Texas A&M as it deals with TV audiences."

"You're going to start seeing a lot of things about the SEC Network coming soon. They are really wanting to engage the fans."

"6 of the top-10 bowl games last year involved SEC teams. There is a reason AT&T Uverse signed up day one for the SEC Network."

"We are investing $11.8 million into production facilities to better facilitate the SEC Network."

"On Tuesday we held a networking seminar for our senior athletes. We're trying to prepare our athletes for life after sports."

"This is a rare weekend where we don't have any events going on in Aggieland. Football is off and everyone else in on the road."

"We're doing some things to enhance the basketball game experience. We feel the atmosphere has gotten a little stale."

"I think I could go an entire month with solely maroon ties. It's nothing like Loftin's bow-tie collection, however."

"If I was the Texas AD, I would try to get back to playing A&M because it would be the only way to level the playing field."

"The Lohman Lobby of the Bright Complex is open during normal office hours on non-game days. Come by and see it!"

"A&M has made a commitment to fielding a NC caliber football team. No other program is making this level of commitment."

"We're still behind the gun from a scheduling standpoint. We're still being hurt by the conference transition."

"We're talking with one program right now that everyone is familiar with. Hopefully we can go public with that soon."

"We're growing the grass for the 2014 and 2015 Kyle Field. We're an agricultural school, obviously we will have natural grass."

Legit non-con opponent to be revealed?

I will be interested to see who it is. When he said we are talking to an opponent that everyone is familiar with, my first thought was a BCS school in the state (namely Baylor and Tech). If not one of those two, I would imagine it would have to be a "national" school like a USC, or Ohio State or Notre Dame. Maybe even Oregon.

I know we are doing a lot of great things, but really? No other program (Oregon, Alabama, etc.) are making the commitment we are? One of those schools has 3 out of four and the other has been in a lot of BCS games. And both have facilities we are trying to match.

Nebraska?

I would love a series with Big Red. I don't want to play any Big 12 team in Texas. It helps them. Would not be opposed to OSU either, That would drive the others nuts...

Didn't they say USC and Oregon were canceled due to the conference scheduling issues?

I read where Hyman said A&M would schedule 1 FCS, 1 mid-level team and one high profile team for OOC. I still don't understand why we'd schedule an FCS school. There are plenty of FBS schools we could play that would give similar levels of competition without having to go the FCS route. UTSA, UTEP, New Mexico State, any of the directional Louisiana schools for instance would be the same as Sam Houston. UNLESS...it's a financial thing we need to help satisfy whatever left over financial debt we're trying to pay off.

Should be North Texas so we can extend our presence in the DFW Metroplex. Mega football talent up there.

The only BDF opponent I see as a legit candidate for a home and home series is TCU. Would be perfect way to stick it in tu's eye for not playing us. Start dating its new girlfriend.

And it's a very winnable game, which would make it much more desirable as a home and home than, say, OU.

Things are "stale" in Reed Arena? Putting a good team on the court would help.

How about hiring a new men's basketball coach.

There are 25 FBS schools that still need an OOC for 2014.

ACC - Boston College, Miami, Syracuse

American - Houston, Louisville, Temple

Big 12 - TCU

Big 10 - Purdue (ND needs to drop a game and it's between them and Rice)

CUSA - East Carolina, Marshall, North Texas, Rice, Southern Miss

MAC - Akron, Ball State, Buffalo, Western Michigan

Mountain West - Colorado State, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah State

Pac 12 - Stanford, Washington State

Sun Belt - Appalachian State, Arkansas State

best guesses are TCU, Miami, and/or Houston.

TCU makes a lot of sense b/c SMU needs to drop an OOC game to make room for them. I don't think they will drop Baylor 2 years in a row, and their deals with North Texas and Minnesota were signed very recently.

Right now A&M is set to play SMU and Arky back to back in DFW. I doubt our AD wants to do that considering the less than stellar ticket sales at JerryWorld.

If A&M and SMU mutually agree to cancel then both of us can play TCU. A&M on Sept. 6 and SMU on Sept 20.

since I hate the idea of playing Lamar I will guess (hope) we play Houston 9/20 where SMU was. We would then return Houston in something like '17 for a split gate at Reliant.

and so we have a big time team to open new Kyle in '15 we will go to Miami on 9/13.

Stanford could also work on 9/6 and 9/20. Perhaps Sumlin wants to get a Cali game in for recruiting?

Of course it could also be that we get TCU and two rent a wins vs the sisters of the poor in Lamar and somebody like North Texas.

it all depends on what Cook means by "we are familiar with." Does that mean we as in Aggies that grew up in Texas or we as in the nation at large? I would guess the former.

anyway, unless somebody cancels a series to play with us, at least 1 of those 25 teams are coming to Kyle.
