Soccer: Aggies clinch SEC Championship with 2-1 win over Georgia

Now that is how you win a championship!

After Sunday’s last minute South Carolina goal, the Aggies had to wait a few more days for another chance to clinch the SEC.

It was worth every minute!

“This is a testament to the leadership of this team. They knew what they had to do and they were not afraid to step out and take it.” Coach Guerrieri was spot on with his assessment of this teams attitude and performance tonight. They took it to Georgia from seemingly the moment the clock started ticking.

Bianca Brinson seemed to have the first goal of the contest eight minutes in, but it was called off due to a questionable interference call. Just over ten minutes later the Aggies did claim their 1-0 lead with Allie Bailey’s backheeled finish off of a Janae Couisneau header.

The scoring did not stop there, both the ones that counted and the ones that didn’t. Just before the half, the Aggies took a corner kick and after multiple attempts Ashlynn Harryman blasted one into the back net. It was one second too late. The Aggies took a 1-0 lead into halftime but remained firing in the second.

The dynamic duo of Shea Groom and Kelley Monogue (or Shelley) combined for a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute when Monogue threaded two defenders and set Shea up for a clear shot to the left side of the goal. “Tonight was just a display of the chemistry me and Kelley have built. She knows where I’m at and has given me a hundred beautiful passes. I was happy to get that one in.”

Georgia tightened things up 15 minutes later when they took advantage of some Aggie mistakes in front of their own goal and made it a one score ball game. It would have been 2-2 if not for a tremendous display of athleticism from senior Jordan Day with 12 minutes left. Faced with a one on one match up, Jordan came out and made a leaping grab on a well-struck ball to keep the A&M lead intact. “I honestly couldn’t tell you how I held onto it, but I was pretty pumped.” Day was not the only one. Her coach shared similar thoughts on Jordan’s game winning save, “That save secured a championship for us.”

As the Aggies move into postseason play, they look to get rested and ready for a run at more championships. “This will be their first weekend off since July. Get our legs under us and enjoy this championship before we go and try to win another one.”

A&M will be back in competition next week in Orange Beach, Alabama for the SEC Tournament. They will do so as the regular season SEC Champions.
