Soccer: Aggies claim a top seed for the first time in program history

Coming off of multiple SEC titles, momentum has kept building for this Aggie soccer team.

Monday afternoon, it was announced that for the first time in program history, A&M would be a number one seed in the NCAA tournament.

Coach Guerrieri and his players were excited about what the news means for the team going forward, “We’ve been working a long time. This is our 20th tournament in a row, but it is our first time to actually be acknowledged as a number one seed. It is something this team firmly set as a goal and I am so proud that this team went out and got it done.”

Being a number one seed comes with the advantage of playing at home, as long as you continue to win, for the first four rounds. Shea Groom knows how important that can be, “Our home field advantage, I would put it better than anywhere in the country. Being home with the 12th man and the maroon militia will give us so much motivation and such an advantage over other teams, it is hard to play here. It is such a big deal to finally share this tournament with the 12th man.”

Defensive captain Meghan Streight echoed her teammates sentiments, “We’re excited to be a one seed and to play at home, because we win at home. It is a huge advantage.”

Having the ability to play at home until the final four is an achievement this team deserved, but the Aggies are not content with anything but making it past College Station. That starts with Houston Baptist Friday at seven, “ I like our path because it leads through College Station.” Coach Guerrieri went on to speak about how his team is preparing mentally for what lies ahead,  “As far as what happens down the line, there will be a lot of unexpected things that happen. What we know we can expect is that if we put our focus onto Houston Baptist and concentrate on that particular match, then we get to play at home the next game.”

Confidence is high, as it should be, as the Aggies move into the tournament. Shea Groom likes what she has seen, “Going out to Orange Beach and coming back with a trophy is part of the story we are writing this season. I know we have really high expectations. Going into the tournament, we know we haven’t played our best soccer yet, and that is always exciting and encouraging to get good results without playing our best.”
