Texas A&M adds former Rice FB Jerry Johnson III via transfer portal

By Jason Howell
April 16, 2023

Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M tapped into the transfer portal for another addition today as Rice graduate fullback Jerry Johnson III announced he his transferring to Texas A&M.

The 6-foot-1, 240-pound fullback began his career as a walk-on center before moving to fullback in the fall of his true freshman season in 2019. He quickly made his presence felt at fullback and on special teams. According to PFF, he was graded Rice’s top special teams performer in 2021. Over the course of his career, he played in 26 games and made a name for himself for his blocking and tenacity on the field.

Johnson is a familiar face around the Aggie program. He joins his father Jerry Johnson II, who is an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Texas A&M, and his younger brother Chantz Johnson‍, who signed with Texas A&M out of College Station High School in the 2023 class.

He also joins former Rice teammates and preferred walk-on transfers Aidan Siano and Derek Ferraro in the Texas A&M program, and he is A&M’s third scholarship addition via the portal, joining cornerbacks Sam McCall (Florida State) and Tony Grimes (North Carolina).

Welcome aboard Mr. Johnson.
Great addition to the program with great family history at A&M
I wonder how influential Bobby Petrino was and adding a full back to his offense?

Interesting... almost no one uses fullbacks anymore so I'd be curious to see if Petrino will actually use a traditional fullback or use him more like a power tailback.

He told me he would use him as a combo fb/hback.

If he can block and run tough will be of help.

So we continue to use our scholarships on coach's low ranked kids? Two for Johnson and we tried one for Price. Can we just pay our coaches more money and use our scholarships on good players? Of course, I guess if you have 15 scholarships available, you can afford to just give them to your employee's sons.

Underwhelming. But that's becoming the norm with this 5-win staff.

Bottom of the roster ST guy.

Good teammate. Good character.

Why wouldn't they take him?

Can't win a national championship with 12 empty scholarships.

Do you expect those to fill with starters?

Let's be honest we need some decent depth for special teams.

Can't win one by throwing away 12 scholarships either. But it doesn't really matter at this point. Jimbo's window to ever win a championship here closed after going 5-7 last year and losing to App State in year 5. Recruiting will never recover to the level needed to get championship level depth and talent.

This thread just shows that many of you have the critical thinking skills of toads.

It shows that you've spent way too much time on premium reading sunshine pumping garbage. If you actually think this program can compete for a championship, I don't know what to tell you. We can certainly improve from 5-7, but you don't go from losing to App State to winning a championship. There is about a 2 year window for us to have a couple of decent seasons, but the writing is on the wall with the way recruiting has fallen off a cliff in the '23 and '24 classes. Long term, we will not have the talent or depth to compete with and beat Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State. It's easy to have the wool pulled over your eyes by the one-sided discussion on premium. I've been there. But that's not reality.

You literally just proved my point.

We're not competing for a championship next year so why does it matter if we bring in a guy for 1 year for depth?

Scathing truth in this response. Michigan still has yet to wash that App State stank off, and that's been over 15 years.

So, you very clearly acknowledged that the goal of filling this scholarship should be to win a championship.

But now you're changing your tune and saying you agree we're filling this scholarship for a year just to fill it since we're not winning a championship next year anyway, which was exactly MY point. If we're taking these kinds of players, we're not trying to win a championship. Or if we are trying, this certainly isn't going to get the job done.

TLDR: I was right, you were wrong, and you agree with me.

Hmmm, didn't Michigan just stomp the $h##^ out of Ohio State 2 years in a row and make the 4-team playoff last year? I know hell of a lotta schools that would love to stink like that (including 90% of the SEC).

I'm not going to knock a guy, walk on or otherwise, that's going to be on this team. There are a lot of them out there that are good football players. Sam Matthews, for example is a good football player. He probably will get few opportunities in games but he can play. If Johnson can catch and block, we can use him. Probably the best H-back/FB we've had in the past 10 years was a walk on and ended up playing for the Texans.

Feel the same. He, along with a thousand others, was not the number 1 recruit in the country coming out of high school, only one guy was. But he is one of us now, so I welcome him and hope he has a great season. Maybe he causes a key fumble on special teams, maybe he has a great block to spring one of our back on a long TD run. Just have to see.

I think he will be mainly special teams. Don't see how he would fit into our offense. He was recruited as a center and with the loss of Wykoff (assuming he gets a transfer) we will be short on depth at center.
