No. 1! Texas A&M claims top spot in D1Baseball's latest rankings

All alone at the top.

In the latest D1Baseball poll, Texas A&M moved up two spots from No. 3 to the top of the college baseball world.

This, of course, comes after an emphatic sweep of Vanderbilt at Blue Bell Park that saw the Aggies outscore the Commodores 36-6 over the three-game set.

A&M is now 32-4 on the year and 11-4 in Southeastern Conference play.

The Aggies are also just one game behind former No. 1 Arkansas for the top spot in the SEC West division.

Dating back to 1980, this is just the seventh A&M team to be ranked No. 1 at any point in any poll, along with 1989, 1993, 1999, 2009, 2015 and 2016.

This is the first time the Aggies have been ranked No. 1 in the D1B top 25 since March 28, 2016.

Playing at an elite level, the 2024 club is entering discussions and debates usually reserved for the 1989 and 2016 teams.

Kelly Cothern, TexAgs
The trio of Grahovac, LaViolette and Montgomery combined for six homers during the thrashing of Vanderbilt.

Whether or not they can exceed 2022 for the title of "most successful" team ever still remains to be seen, but the pieces are certainly in play.

The lineup features superstars like Braden Montgomery, Jace LaViolette and Gavin Grahovac, while Ryan Prager and Evan Aschenbeck are pitching like future All-Americans.

The offense is among the nation's best.

The pitching staff continues to dominate the zone.

In short, 2024 has been an exciting spring at Olsen Field.

The odds of it being a special summer for Jim Schlossnagle & Co. only appear to be growing.

Far from any type of coronation, earning the title of No. 1 is just another reason to believe.

That poll is very interesting from a volatility standpoint.

Everyone was complaining earlier in the year about how the polls were slow to adjust/adapt to teams playing well or poorly.

Now we get to Week 9 and look at all those huge swings. Ten of the Top 25 moved +/- 5 or more spots (includes South Carolina jumping back in at 20 and UCF dropping out from 17).

Yep. seems like you have to hit a tipping point in conference play... and then all of a sudden they're ready to hammer you for dropping a series.

I'm not worried about staying #1 or some other team scorches their way up. Top 5 or 10 for all intents and purposes we're having the same discussion come hosting time.

But it'll sure be nice to see that number next to our name for at least a week. Here's to many more!

Yep, loosing a home series and being swept will result in changes in the rankings.

SEC has the top 4 with 4 more making the poll with an additional 2 lurking just a little outside the rankings.

Amazing. Can't let your guard down in conference play. Arky learned that this weekend.

And I know it doesn't mean anything but two of the four SEC teams that aren't in the Top 25 or lurking just outside are LSU and Ole Miss who we still play and who won the last two National Championships.

My only point that we all know is that almost any team in the SEC is a potential Top 25 team in any given year. Baseball is the SECs best sport top to bottom, IMHO.
