I don't usually pay attention to announcers so I was only half paying attention when announcers were talking about Jace sitting at 3rd most HRs and it got me thinking about apples to apples comparisons.

A hitter that has 1000 ABs hitting 100 HRs is somewhat less impressive than a player with 500 ABs hitting 85 HRs.

But then I got to thinking about the number of games that we have run ruled. Only batting 6 innings has an effect on an objective comparison when you are trying to measure records. How many of those existing records were from home games were the Ags were trailing in the 9th? Run ruling may get you an extra plate appearance, but typically RR occurs because of walks. Just because the score is big it doesn't mean players got ABs.

RRing isn't simply because of offensive production. That's half the story. You also need pitching to give you the margin. So I'm blaming the pen for causing all these short games.

It averages out because they're winning those short games and therefore getting more ABs in 6/7 innings than expected.

According to Baseball Cube, Holt finished with 56 HR in 771 ABs and 873 PAs.

Jace has 47 HR so far in 413 ABs and 523 PAs.

Per the Cube, Byington had 47 HR in 699 ABs and 764 PAs.

The difference IMO was Daylan's Freshman year vs Jace. Without looking back Daylan hit like 34-36 in 55 games his Jr. year.

Daylan hit over .300 every year but his HR totals varied widely. He hit 7 HR his first year. Then the monster year 2 with 34 HR, 105 RBI and an 8.44 AB/HR ratio in 70 games. Then 15 HR in his 3rd and final season.

Four 20+ home run seasons in our entire pre-2024 history, and one of those was Jace last year (Scanlin 1986, Kuz 1998, Daylon 1999, and Jace 2023). Jace and Braden 2024 made that 6 individual seasons. Gavin is going to make it 7 here in a few short games.

So in summary, before Jace we had 3 total in our entire multi-decades history.

We have 3 in 2023 and 2024 combined. And we have a chance to have 3 in 2024 alone.

Absolutely wild.

And yes, absolutely monsters.

No doubt. Gorilla ball is back. Someone had a good graph/link earlier in the year basically showing how we've trended back up to similar to late 80s ish. And climbing. And I'm sure another jump this year. Holt was at/near the peak with composite bats. Then BBCOR and plummet. Bottomed out and then started trending up again. Not to Holt's era yet (coming into the season) but definitely on upward plane in the long ball department. I've seen lots of talk about the balls and lower seams as a factor.
