Yesterday on The Ticket...

<pause for whining about The Ticket>

They were reading from an article and discussed that Kyle Field has only had 26 sellouts in the past 34 years (or something similar to that).

Surely that isn't correct, right? I remember being there in the late 90s and selling out several games a year. Surely during the SWC domination of the '80s we had a lot of sellouts.

Was the writer using the wrong numbers? I am still searching for the actual article.

How convenient to leave out the fact that our alumni base is just now approaching the numbers of other major schools.

I heard this conversation as well. Corby then made a comment that despite our passionate fan base, there just aren't that many of us. REALLY!?

I don't know if sellouts are a true indicator of a need to expand a stadium anyway. Taking into account the number of sellouts PRIOR to the Zone opening (not that many), it's not as though the Zone has been sitting empty for the last 12 years.

Arseholes starting conversation to justify jobs, and stir the pot, cause that what they do. Regardless of sellouts, Kyle is one hell of an atmosphere that others do not get and are jealous of.

It also depends on what they call a sellout. All the tickets sold, or all the seats filled? Different.

Great point. We really are in a remarkably unusual situation. 50 years ago we had, I think about 7,800 students or so. This past fall we were at 53,337. We just had 37,000 ACT scores submitted for 8,000 remaining spots for this coming fall. Texas' population continues to grow at the 3rd highest rate nationally. Each year that passes, our living alumni base is growing significantly, the B/CS MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) keeps growing, and the Law School and BioTech Program are going to add a certain # of students themselves....it's foolish to build too small, and it's foolish to build too big. However, since we're spending a s***load of money, if we err on the large side, at least we know that - given current projections - those seats will be filled at some point. Eventually, Kyle will be too small, even at 112,000.

I don't know why anyone listens to those idiots

The rated capacity is 82,589. Our average over the past two years has been more than 4000 OVER capacity.

We had almost 87,000 for frakin South Carolina State. The idiots at that station would see that stat and think it was the 'Cocks. But no, it was SC State.

And don't we have the most expensive tickets in the country? By a large margin? What would our attendance be if we dropped prices to a normal level? Based on the pricing, they haven't been interested in selling out every game.

We also may have the fastest growing alumni base in the country.

Every time Corby talks about CFB, he just further proves that he knows nothing about college football and even less about us. Rines at least admits when he isn't sure about something and doesn't act like an over opinionated ignorant ass.

We have been very proactive in our stadium expansions to ensure we meet the future needs of our alumni base. BB reversed that trend somewhat and as a result, we have had more sellouts over the past decade. I think we would already have a 1st deck in the south zone otherwise.

hbkyle ...good post

last two years of all sellouts (I think)

I was at that South Carolina State game, expecting it to be "roomy". The other 86,999 made the place look pretty packed. I don't know what the number is that they call a sellout.

After this season, our sellout streak should reach into the 20s.That streak should continue because for many families, the only shot we get to see the Ags play live are picking up tickets from StubHub or ticket exchange, etc... In other words, demand is huge right now and you have to pay a premium regardless of which game ... even the "lesser" opponents.

There is a large part of that time frame where the ridiculously bad seats in the old horseshoe, where you were a mile away from the field and at a low angle, probably didn't do us any favors. That time frame also included a lot of games against ****ty SWC teams that don't sell their allotment. But that said, the stat still doesn't sound right.

Important to note:

Bill Byrne switched our attendance measuring method sometime between 2006-2007 I believe, where A&M began counting attendance based on tickets sold (which is how all other schools do it, including tu) and not how many people actually show up to the event. This changes numbers, dramatically in some cases.

That's a fact, I remember when Byrne did it because all the sudden all these "record crowds" started happening at Kyle. When you hear , "this is Kyle fields (insert top ten) largest crowd", it's actually not true because it now considers tickets sold not butts in seats.

*********ALL FOLLOWING DATA IS ACCORDING TO www.aggieathletics.com********

Kyle Field seating capacity: 82,600

Here are average attendances for a couple of seasons (including the last 3 seasons):

2012: 86,777
2011: 87,183
2010: 82,477
2008: 82,193
2007: 82,207
2001: 82,711

By these OFFICIAL statistics, not only have we had sell outs, but we have AVERAGED right at or above a sell out in 6 of the last 12 seasons! In the last two seasons, Texas A&M has had its two highest average attendance seasons for football, both averaging over 4000 more attendees than official seating capacity. Couple this with the growing rate of both the student body and alumni base, increased interest due to SEC play, increased visitor ticket allotment of the SEC and the fact that our team enters the coming with a rising sopohomore Heisman winner and a national title contending team and you have OBVIOUS reasons for expansion and renovations.

Attendance is not the same as a sellout.

However, I believe it. In the big time winning of the 90's, when capacity was about 76K, we might sell one game out a year. Actually, probably only sold out one every other year, against Texas.

People forget it's that BCS is still a small town. We still have to draw our crowds from DFW and Houston for sellouts. And until last year really, there were ALWYAS tickets available, which hurt season ticket sales.

They've been saying since I was a student that demand was going up and up due to demographics, and I think we've finally hit that point.
aggieboy1224
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Attendance by game for the last 3 seasons:

2012: 2011: 2010:
87114 86951 81287
86623 86775 77579
86442 87358 79069
87429 87361 83453
87101 86934 84479
87222 86411 81392
----- 88645 90079

That would be 14 sell outs in a row. Or 16 sell outs in the last 17 games.

There is no way that we only had 10 sell outs in the previous 31 years.

To be fair to the guys on the Ticket, they weren't being anti-Aggie. They were actually discussing it from the angle that they were shocked because we have such good fans they couldn't believe the stat.

They were being complementary, not sarcastic.
