*ban, mods pls fix title

siap

it took a backseat to the other provisions in the ukraine/israel/taiwan aid package and hasn't gotten much coverage, but last night congress officially passed a measure forcing parent company bytedance (owned by the CCP) to divest tiktok in the us or face a potential ban. biden is expected to sign it, and bytedance is expected to fight it in court.

notably, bytedance has a year to find a buyer before a potential ban would go into effect. speculated likely buyers at this time include microsoft and oracle, although it's unclear if bytedance will be willing to sell even under threat of a ban if they don't.

Quote:

The U.S. Senate voted by a wide margin late Tuesday in favor of legislation that would ban TikTok in the United States if its owner, the Chinese tech firm ByteDance, fails to divest the popular short video app over the next nine months to a year.
...

"For years we've allowed the Chinese Communist party to control one of the most popular apps in America that was dangerously shortsighted," said Senator Marco Rubio, the top Republican on the Intelligence Committee. "A new law is going to require its Chinese owner to sell the app. This is a good move for America."
...

TikTok is set to challenge the bill on First Amendment grounds and TikTok users are also expected to again take legal action. A U.S. judge in Montana in November blocked a state ban on TikTok, citing free speech grounds.
...

The Senate voted 79 to 18 in favor of the bill, which was attached to a measure to provide $95 billion in mostly military aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The TikTok divestment directive won fast-track approval after being introduced just weeks ago.

In 2020, then-President Donald Trump was blocked by the courts in his bid to block TikTok and Chinese-owned WeChat, a unit of Tencent in the United States.

However, the new legislation is likely to give the Biden administration a stronger legal footing to ban TikTok if ByteDance fails to divest the app, experts say.
imo it's good congress finally stopped dragging their feet on this one and exercised some common sense. trump was right to attempt the ban in 2020, no reason for china to have a direct backchannel to spy on tens of millions of americans.

Screw bytedance and the CCP. Ban them totally and completely. Sooner rather than later.

China has been spying on Americans for years. TikTok just makes it more fun.

in retrospect, tiktok's campaign to bombard congress with phone calls from distressed teenagers protesting the "ban" probably wasn't the best idea
Quote:

TikTok dropped a public hammer on Washington on Thursday, sending a direly worded alert to users urging them to call Congress and stop a bill designed to cut China's ties to the app.
...

The calls didn't work on the committee: It voted 50-0 to advance the bill on Thursday.

They should ban everything that has China involvement (including themselves)

Good bipartisan bill...

Horsehoe politics proves itself again considering who voted against it.

yep, at least ever since a big bytedance investor wrote him a fat check a month or two back. so much for not being beholden to special interests!

When India banned TicToc four years ago, most of its huge
market of short videos was taken over by Google's You Tube.
Trump knows Google hates him and manipulates the news
to hurt Trump, not to mention giving millions to Dems.

bytedance is rather generously being given the opportunity to divest and be well compensated for their trouble. the fact that they are determined not to relinquish chinese control for billions of dollars says a lot about where they really think tiktok's value lies.

Is it generous? Even if it's a few billion, if you're selling at 50% of market price that is not a generous price. There's very few companies that are American and willing to pay the money that know you have to sell. Not a great negotiation condition.

That my friend is government backed extortion that the founders specifically wrote to prevent in the constitution with the writ of attainder clause and the 4th amendment. Not a fan of tiktok, but don't think for a second they won't hesitate to come for Americans too as well.

Now, if you want to pass a law banning foreign owned companies from holding a % stake or above certain industries, I can get behind that.

This was nothing more than throwing a bone. They will find a friendly court and have this thrown out. Chicoms will continue to use TikTok to brainwash the population, especially the youth.
