Seems that way. I've been considering a move to protonmail or something like it anyway but I didn't want to go through the hassle. I guess this may seal the deal though

I used Proton for a while before using my Association email. It's a great option. Might go back to it.

The article's link shows how to transfer the emails to another Gmail account, which is probably the easiest method since old & new email accounts are moved within the same Google ecosystem.

At minimum, this can be done to avoid losing old emails after the deadline. Then switching to Proton Mail or whatever can be done later without time constraints.

The transfer process at least for me did not work well. Email was scattered, sub folders (labels) didn't copy, new labels were created in the process. It was a mess

If every email I've ever sent or received were deleted right now, it probably wouldn't affect my life much.

Like someone above said, once they got rid of the free storage the account wasn't worth much. Won't miss it.

Maybe a stupid question, but when my iPhone, iPad, or laptop download the emails onto the devices, would those emails remain on those devices after the account goes to the afterlife?

If the email was configured with "POP" settings, the emails will be on the devices. If it uses "IMAP", the email remains on the server & will be lost once the account closes. Google does have a way to export the emails.
